Manchester United have stepped up the search for a new striker with David Silva's agent Julio Llorente confirming that United have made an offer for his client. However, the 22-year-old Valencia forward will not be moving to Old Trafford. The club’s offer has been rejected and Silva has no desire to move to England.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Llorente said: "Manchester United made an offer for David Silva, but this has been turned down by Valencia. Silva doesn't want to play in England because he is happy at Valencia.

"His family are settled and if he was to move it would only be to another Spanish club, like Real Madrid or Barcelona. David Silva will start the new season at Valencia."

Llorente's comments suggest that United are actively seeking a new striker.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that he would like to see a new forward sign before Sunday's league opener - but has also said he's content with his current squad.

Silva was clearly one of Fergie's prime targets but any deal for the 5"7 Spanish international has seemingly been ruled out by the player's agent. He can play up front, in attacking midfield and on the right-side of midfield.

The Community Shield win on Sunday underlined the importance of bringing a new striker to the club - with Thierry Henry, Roque Santa Cruz and Klaas-Jan Huntellar other names linked with a summer switch to Lancashire.

Dimitar Berbatov is believed to be the club's top target - but Spurs are anxious not to sell the Bulgarian to a Premier League rival.
