Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as the new head coach of the Portuguese national team. The 55-year-old has penned a four-year deal to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari - confirming a second stint in charge of his native country. The search now begins for Sir Alex Ferguson to appoint a new right-hand man.

Queiroz has been heavily linked with the post since Scolari decided to join United's title-chasing rivals Chelsea.

He spent a spell in charge of Portugal in 1991 - winning fourteen out of 31 matches. He failed to qualify for Euro 1992 and the 1994 World Cup and eventually left in hostile circumstances.

He's enjoyed a much-travelled managerial career and has further experience on the international scene with the United Arab Emirates and South Africa. Queiroz has also held at clubs like Sporting Lisbon and Real Madrid.

He leaves with our best wishes - particularly following these very kind words:

"It is with a very heavy heart that I leave the greatest football club in the world," said Queiroz.

"This has been a special period in my life both personally and professionally.

"To Sir Alex, I thank him for his faith in me and his knowledge, spirit and desire from which I will take strength and have confidence in my new role."

The hunt now begins for Fergie to find a replacement to Queiroz. Last time Queiroz departed Old Trafford, Walter Smith made a short stint at United. A host of high-profile names have already been linked - but who will it be? Have your say on the messageboard.
