Cristiano Ronaldo picked up a fantastic 'double' as he was awarded the PFA player and young player of the season trophies. However, the biggest news of the night was, perhaps, the annoucement of the PFA Premiership Team of the Year.
Cristiano Ronaldo's superb performances this season have been rewarded with a PFA Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season double.
The Portuguese international looked to have little future in the Premiership after the controversy of the World Cup; but he has hit back in the face of adversity with a string of amazing performances and already has sixteen Premiership goals to his name. His heroics have played a major role on helping United's charge for three major trophies and he was a worthy winner of the PFA awards; voted for by the winger's fellow professionals.
Ronaldo beat Chelsea goal machine Didier Drogba into second place whilst fellow midfielder and United team-mate Paul Scholes came third. Steve Gerrard, Cecs Fabregas and Ryan Giggs were the other short listed players.
Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Ronaldo: "At this moment in time, I think he is the best player in the world and his season has been incredible."
The 22-year-old becomes the first player to win both awards since Andy Gray did the double thirty years ago. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney, the player who Ronaldo clashed with at the World Cup final, was one of the unsuccessful candidates for the young player. Ronaldo beat Arsenal's Fabregas and Spurs' Aaron Lennon into second and third place respectively.
It was a superb night for Manchester United - but even more amazing that Ronaldo's triumph was the announcement of the PFA Premiership Team of the Year. No fewer than EIGHT United stars were named in the XI; clear testament to the superb football that Sir Alex Ferguson's men have played this season. Gerrard, Drogba and Spurs forward Dimitar Berbatov were the only non-United names included in the 'Dream Team'.
The PFA Premiership Team of the Year (4-4-2):
Goalkeeper: Edwin Van Der Sar
(Manchester United)
Defender: Gary Neville (Manchester United)
Defender: Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Defender: Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United)
Defender: Patrice Evra (Manchester United)

Midfielder: Paul Scholes (Manchester United)
Midfielder: Steve Gerrard (Liverpool)
Midfielder: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Forward: Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

Congratulations to all those named.
