Roy Keane has branded rumours linking him with the Manchester United manager's job as an "insult". The Irishman is currently in charge of Sunderland and is leading the Black Cats towards promotion back to the Premiership.

Roy Keane has branded rumours linking him with the Manchester United managerial position as "an insult".

After enjoying a superb start to coaching life with Sunderland, the former United midfielder has been linked with the job at Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson decides to retire.

However, Keane has insisted that he is not thinking of a return to Old Trafford and wants to concentrate on achieving success in the North East with Championship promotion-chasers Sunderland.

"I don't sit at home at night thinking that one day I want to manage Manchester United," said Keane; who has steered the Black Cats from the relegation zone to the top of the Championship since taking charge.

"And it is wrong to suggest I see Sunderland as some sort of stepping-stone. I don't think you can think that way. That would be an insult."
