Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has once again underlined his wishes to see the Premiership adopt a winter break. The Scotsman feels the New Year should see a three-week rest for the league's highly-paid players. New Page 3

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to see the Premiership implement a winter break into it's seasonal calendar.

"We had international friendlies at the beginning of June so why can't we play the season until the end of May?" said the Scotsman.

"The players need to keep going anyway for these internationals. But why not start a three-week ban on 1 January and use the whole of May when the weather is better?"

Ferguson's suggestion is not a new initiative, and a winter break is an integral part of many leagues across the continent. However, it may well result in the number of participating Premiership teams being reduced or changes to the format of the FA Cup.
