Recent Form : To get to this stage, their first appearance in a semi final in this competition, Queen's have beaten Gretna at Hampden and then won more difficult away ties at Forfar (went to penalties) and Berwick. Brechin, for their part, have efficiently disposed of Elgin (away) and then St. Johnstone and Falkirk (after penalties) at home. Given that the last two opponents were amongst the favourites to win this competition, to reach this stage (for the second year in a row) is an impressive achievement.
       
Likely Outcome : By virtue of having knocked out two top quality First Division sides, together with their Second Division status, Brechin will visit Hampden as firm favourites to progress to the final. For their part, Queen's will point to the defeat of Berwick (who themselves had knocked out Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Airdrie Utd.) as proof of their ability to go all the way.

The history books are not kind to Queen's as far as recent League encounters at Hampden are concerned as the amateurs have only won three out of the last fourteen matches at the National Stadium. As far as cup games are concerned, there have only been four to date as follows:

  • 1956-57 (S.C.) 3-0 to QP at Hampden
  • 1975-76 (L.C.) 2-1 to Brechin at Lesser Hampden
  • 1999-00 (C.C.) 1-0 to QP at Glebe Park
  • 2000-01 (C.C.) 1-1 but Brechin won on penalties at Glebe Park

Queen's can rightly point to the fact that (technically speaking) Brechin have never won a cup-tie at Hampden, but that will count for little on this occasion as Brechin's elder statesmen like Grant and Cairney will envisage this as their last chance to play in a national cup final. Regrettably, their experience may count against Queen's youngsters who most certainly will give their all, but which may just not be quite enough given the lack of a proven goalscorer like Templeman. Brechin to win 2-0.
