Seattle Mariners in US sport's longest post-season drought

Always a losing ground

The Seattle Mariners are one of the unluckiest of all American professional sports teams in the 21st Century and it's partly thanks to NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

The Mariners have not reached the post season of Major League Baseball 2001. 2001 was the year Ichiro Suzuki (pictured) entered baseball fans' consciousness with a magnificent rookie season accumulating a rookie-record 242 hits, the most by any MLB player since 1930. He was instrumental in helping the Mariners to the post-season losing out to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

Although 16 seasons is a very long time they didn't hold the unenviable title of longest current US pro-sports streak without a playoff birth until Sunday night's NFL season-ending Baltimore Ravens defeat.

The 31-27 scoreline in favour of the Cincinnati Bengals knocked the Ravens out of the Wildcard position and handed it to the Buffalo Bills thus ending the Bills' 17-year wait for a playoff spot and handing the unwanted to record to the Seattle Mariners.

The longest active post-season droughts are as follows:

1. Seattle Mariners (MLB): 16 seasons
2. Cleveland Browns (NFL): 15 seasons
3. Miami Marlins (MLB): 14 seasons
4. Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA): 13 seasons
5. Sacramento Kings (NBA): 11 seasons
6. San Diego Padres (MLB): 11 seasons
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL): 10 seasons
8. Chicago White Sox (MLB): 9 seasons
9. Carolina Hurricanes (NHL): 8 seasons
10. New York Jets (NFL): 7 seasons

The Mariners had a losing season in 2017 posting up 78-84 which placed them seven games back of a post-season position and although they are expected to improve this offseason it remains to be seen if they can reach the American League Divisional Series 2018.
