By Mora Mackinnon
February 22 2002

The Roughyeds were soundly beaten by Workington, and to be truthfull never really got into the match. Town went into the game in 3rd place and looked much stronger and more determined than Oldham. New boss John Harbin now knows that he faces a massive task in getting this side into the play-offs... <

MATCH REPORT

Oldham's new coach John Harbin named virtually the same side as last week, Paul Norton has now recovered from his groin injury and was named amongst the substitutes.

Another bleak, windy Cumbrian day greeted the Roughyed fans who had bothered to make the 150 mile journey. The Oldham players did not appear until kick-off time and maybe it was an unwise decision to skip their pre-match warm up. Workington started the match much better and pressed forward continiously. The pressure told after just seven minutes, when Jamie Beaumont powered his way through Oldham's sleepy defence. Tane Manihera made short work of the conversion.

Three minutes later the Roughyeds were behind again. This time Kevin Hetherington managed to touchdown over the line, despite being surrounded by Oldham defenders. This time Manihera missed the difficult conversion.

Oldham just couldn't seem to keep possesion and seemed unable to get out of their own half. More Workington pressure followed and only last ditch defending from Sibson and Dodd kept Town from adding to their lead.

Then, in the nineteenth minute Jason Clegg made one of his customary powerhouse runs forward and managed to release John Hough, who found himself clean through and gratefully took the chance to score. Sadly John Braddish missed the conversion.

Another Workington attack resulted in them being awarded a penalty and Tane Manihera elected to kick for goal and added another two points to Town's score. Two minutes from half-time the Workington attack again easily overwheled Oldham's defence and after a string of passes the ball arrived at Neil Frazer, the winger headed for the try line. Tane Manihera kicked the difficult conversion.

Second-Half

Things didn't start much better for Oldham in this half, they went behind again with just four minutes gone. Martin Wodd ran straight through the Roughyed's defence and passed the ball out wide to Carl Slice, who scored right in the corner. Manihera missed the difficult conversion.

Minutes later John Hough, who had been Oldham's best player, limped off with a leg injury. The Roughyeds switched Keith Brennan to hooker and substitute Neil Roden went to scrum-half. Roden made an immediate impact scoring a finely worked try right between the posts. John Braddish converted the kick.

In the 66th minute Carl Spice scored again for Workington, easily going through to score his second try. Tane Manihera converted again to increase Town's lead. Two minutes later Oldham's John Braddish replied with a magnificent solo try, but unfortunatley couldn't convert the goal-kick.

Finally Oldham seemed to have decided to start playing, but sadly left their comeback far too late ! Neil Roden passed the ball to Keith Brennan, who looked a certainty to score, sadly Brennan fumbled the ball and trhe chance went begging. Then in the final minute of the game David Gibbons received the ball from the scrum and ran 40 yards to score. John Braddish kicked his secong goal of the game.

Final-Score : Oldham 20 Workington 28

Moan of the Match
Another very poor start by the Roughyeds, who didn't seem to be interested in playing this game !
