With both of these sides preferring to play open attacking football, a cracking game was to be expected and we got just that.

Airdrie started the match with the Fernandez, Prest partnership up front and both players looked well up for the game. The diamonds done most of the pressing in the first half and could have easily been a few goals up within the first 20 minutes but poor finishing and stout defending from the Ayr back four kept the scoreline blank. Ayr United had the ball in the net late in the first half but the goal was dis-allowed for off side.

Airdrie then stepped up the pace again and almost went one up when good work down the left hand side from Calderon and McCann resulted in a cut back to Sanjuan who watched in agony as his strike from 20 yards beat the keeper and cannoned off the post.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended with Airdrie pushing for the first goal but they seemed to lack that little bit of invention in the last third.

Ayr United then began to haul themselves back into the game and It was Airdrie's back four that had to look sharp. A cross from the left hand side found Pat McGinley and he got in front of his marker to get his head on the ball but fortunately for the home side, the midfielder could not get the ball on target.

Airdrie made one last push for the winner and almost got it when Fabrice Moreau played a dangerous ball across the Ayr box and a goal mouth scramble ensued, Fernandez was first to have a go but the keeper made the save and then Elliot had a go but his shot was blocked by a defender on the line and the ball was eventually cleared.

Overall a point each was probably a fair result due to the unrelenting pressure from Airdrie and the stout defending from Ayr United.

Man of The Match : Darren Brady

Although Darren was replaced by Tero Pilvi, he seemed to be the pivot in the midfield and he was part of almost every attack. He looked sharp and worked extremely hard.
