Airdrieonians do it the hard way as we come from behind yet again to defeat another first division team, this time in the Scottish League Cup.

I hate harping back to last season but as football fans it’s all we really have, past glory, past failure, past matches. Airdrieonians did well last week and using the prediction league as the barometer no Airdrieoninas fans thought we would lose today’s match. I guarantee there wasn’t a single person who watched the opening twenty minutes of today’s match that didn’t think we were back in the darkest days of the 2012-2013 season.

The teams lined up –

Jimmy Boyle made one change from the team that beat Hamilton last week, Martin Hardie took his place in the middle of the park and Jamie Bain dropped to the bench.  This change forced Nathan Blockley on to the right wing.

In my personal opinion this contributed to a disastrous opening twenty minutes, we seemed unbalanced and kept losing or shape and on fourteen minutes we were a goal down. I have to admit to actually applauding Stenhousemuir’s opener some nice passing play and a sweet strike from a long way out sailed in to the top corner of our net. I don’t think you will see many better strikes this season.

A few minutes later Airdrieonians were in deep trouble John Gemmell brought down Nicky Devlin's cross and played it into the path of Darren Smith he split our defence to put Stenhousemuir 2 – 0 up.

I honestly couldn’t see where one goal was going to come from, never mind the two we now needed. One of those questions were answered just after the half hour mark, Lewis Coult fired in a cross that was headed on by Jim Lister, David Sinclair finished the job by firing home of the cross bar.

If the match wasn’t exciting enough a spat on the half way line between Chris O’Neil and Eddie Malone saw both of them sent for an early shower by referee Andrew Dallas. Now with everything seemingly going against us The Airdrieonians began to battle back.

Nathan Blockley who had wandered in to the middle of the park, hit a shot from outside the penalty box, it looked pretty tame to be honest but like Hamilton’s opener last week it took a deflection and spun in to the net.

There is some debate in to Airdrieonians fourth, all I can say it was prodded home after a corner by either Jim Lister (as announced) or Mick O’Byrne (as being said officially) I don’t care Airdrieonians after being  down by two goals were now winning 3-2 at the end of the first half.

The second half wasn’t nearly as exciting Airdrieonians scored Stenhousemuir scored and the game ended 4 - 3 in our favour.

That’s totally disrespectful to the work that went in to our fourth goal Bain, who had placed Blockley, passed to Lister, Lister back heels back in to Bains path, Bain squares the ball to Coult, Coult takes the ball around Smith who scores making it 4 – 2.

With two minutes to go Stenhousemuirs Ross McMillan gave the game a nail biting finish after he finished off a cross Sean Dickson.

Airdrieonians should have had a fifth with the final kick of the ball and I think a comedy award of the season should be introduced for this single moment of comedy genius. Hopefully it will be in this week’s highlights.....enough said me thinks.
