36 more points……

On a boring Sunday evening (tonight) I decided to have a look at what it would take to survive in the Irn Bru First Division, with six points already in the bag it may take only twelve more wins to secure a future in this division.

In the past five years the team coming third bottom picked up a maximum of forty seven points.

In season 2007/2008

Morton finished eighth ahead of Clyde on goal difference, they had thirty seven points with nine wins, ten draws and seventeen loses and a minus eighteen goal difference. Clyde had minus nineteen and went in to the playoffs.

 Season 2008/2009

Ross County managed to finish eighth with forty seven points; it was a very tight league that year and Morton, Livingston and Queen of the South all finished on forty seven, only goal difference separated them. Airdrie went in to the playoffs with forty two points.

Season 2009/2010

Morton again managed to hold on to eighth place, once again with thirty seven points; they finished ahead of us on thirty three.

Season 2010/2011

In a switch of rolls it was once again Ross County’s turn to come eighth in the league, they finished on forty one points ahead of Cowdenbeath on thirty five points.

Season 2011/2012

Last season it was Morton’s turn to finish eighth, is anyone else beginning to see sequence here? They managed forty two points ahead of Ayr with thirty eight.

With Ross County’s promotion to the Scottish Premier League last season the sequence of Morton – Ross County both finishing eighth has come to an end, could we step in to that position?

In the last five years only Airdrie have failed to stay in the first division with forty two points, Morton have managed it twice with thirty seven points. So thirty six more points and I will be satisfied if we are still relegated after that I’m going to feel very hard done by…

hopefully thistle do us a turn next week and hammer dumbarton, then in 2 weeks time if we can beat cowden at home we could be off to a good start in terms of keeping some points between us and the teams likely to be at the bottom come next may. we have beat three division 1 teams this season, 2 of which were away so the points are there to be taken and hopefully we can do something against dunfermline on saturday, will be a tough game

thanks for the stats guys. I've been kicking this about myself all day and reckoned that we needed 42 points to survive. But havind read ur stats I think 45 points should be the minimum target as I want to avoid the playoffs. So 39 points to go - and where will they relistically come from ? 9 from dumbarton leaves 30. 8 from c'beath leaves 22. 8 from morton leaves 14. another 7 from livi leaves 7.
and 8 from morton does it. Easy peasy !!!

We only play Morton 4 times and you want 16 points.

call me superstitious, but i have been looking at the stats and the coincidences from the past, so im about to put a substatial wager on Airdrie to go up this season.

1979-1980 season promoted... theres a 1 in the years same as now.
1990-1991 season promoted... theres a 1 in the years same as now

i think season 2012-2013 cant be a failure based on that.
