Supporters Trust Consider players fund

By Stomp Admin
August 17 2011

After supporting the clubs aims to bring Jamie Stevenson to the club Airdrie supporters trust are thinking of setting up a fund specifically for this purpose.

At the moment the Trust are looking for  fans to register their interest in such an idea and details can be found on the Trust website at the link below.

http://www.airdrietrust.co.uk/player_fund.html

A PDF of the form, on the Trust website, will be online tonight for download and printing.

In the same vein, the Trust are thinking of re-introducing an idea Andy Waite had a few years ago where fans sponsor an event on the pitch, for instance every clean sheet someone pays £1.

This would be an online system using Paypal.

I'm not against the player fund idea in principle, but the cynic in me wonders if this would mean the club would simply cut its player budget by a corresponding amount. If we were sure this wouldn't happen, I'd contribute.
The £1 or whatever for a clean sheet or scoring a set amount of goals is a good idea but might be difficult to manage, but again I'd be interested in being involved.

Sentiments commendable, idea commendable, but the cynic in me equates our esteemed chair to a certain David Cameron and his big society pish - sign of the times and where we are I suppose

As Above, and also we're not a big enough club and support for it to work.

If 100 people pledge £10 a month (33p a day) we would have £5000 to give the club for the Jan transfer window - that's realistic. Plus this is something people have been asking us to do for quite a while. Anne

£10 a month standing order. No bother, never notice it. Count me in.

i've always backed this idea - the members club

Question?

Ok thinking of ways ahead, but doesnt this idea have the makings of a select bunch of "better" fans than other fans.

Also what if some supports who contribute to this dont want a certain player? We could be paying players that we dont really want.

Just sounds to simplistic, and at the end of it all we are only fans, we could be in danger of funding a club (other than our season tickets and gate money) and NOT geting a say in what happens.

Similar system to what's happening at Clyde just now?

Maybe they trust their Chairman. Besides isn't this what the share issue was for?

Because shares are worthless. They could never afford to buy enough to have any influence.

£15 for a home game. Personally think we contribute enough to the player fund as it is.

GOOD IDEA

I belive if the members club , put in a sum very month and the amount was transferred into shares, then ,over a period of time they would have some influence.

In the past the Trust have been criticised for having no clear direction. The Player's Fund is something we have been thinking about for a while and hopefully it will be something fans approve of. The idea behind it is that we have a seperate account which is the Player's Fund - people can contribute to this in a number of ways, there is the standing order way, the goal pledge etc way and possibly events for the player fund which are seperate from the trust ones - i.e. Aces and POTY. You don't need to be a member of the Trust to join the Players Fund and vice versa. Yes, we will be donating the money to the club and it will be be up to Jimmy Boyle and the Ballantynes who they wish to use this money for - perhaps there will be times when not all of us will like the signings - that is just a risk we will need to take. If you don't want to contribute, don't, if you do contact the Trust.

If I were a Trust member I'd be a bit cheesed of at some of the reaction to what seems to me to be an excellent idea. For ages we have had some people criticising the Trust for not doing things about the product on the park then when they come up with an idea which deserves support in this direction there is a lukewarm response.

If the scheme gets of the ground, will the player brought in write a quarterly letter like my adoptive dolphin do's.

I can see discussion on the merit of the idea. I don't see any criticism of the trust, nor should there be.

how much would need to be raised for an impact?

It would depend if they were new shares or existng onse sold by the board. If you don't get 51% you're not going to be in control, less than that might get you're opinion heard but you won't win any arguments.
It would be counted in 10's of thousands, probably more. The current board are not interested in another substantial share holder.

I think its great that the Trust can help to fund purchase of a new player.

My betting is that funds might be needed soon to buy out the Manager's contract.( Much as though I appreciate the good work he has done for the youth setup)

Thats a bit harsh I'd say. We are 3 league games into the season. Mind you, if things continue the way Saturday did, then maybe, but i cant see it happening myself.

<> Given the track record of Klueless and how he stayed in post then Jimmy Boyle will be here until the end of the season (end of his contract). If we are in the relegation play offs he will not get his contract renewed, if we finish mid table then there's a chance JB might give him another year. <>

Is it a first Airdrie are the worst team in Lanarkshire ?
Why was a tried and tested system messed about with to accommodate lynch , just looks like a ball winner, nothing more ,poor PJ shunted to the left and then caused the goal by not clearing his lines, scapegoat he should not move off right wing , Jimmy was wrong .

andra, Jimmy has made some poor decisions over the past couple of weeks. East Fife last week he took Keast off from left mid, brought on Devlin to play centre mid, and shunted Stevenson out wide when every supporter can see that Stevenson is wasted out there. He's also changed the system a wee bit to accomodate Holmes who gives us absolutely nothing at all. I'll admit that I was glad to see him sign, but he doesn't fit in with the way we should be playing. Get the ball on the deck and let the young forwards run the legs off the older guys. You can almost guarantee goals playing that way, but not with Holmes starting.

After our last two performances - can the trust go and get us Modric - he's unsettled at Spurs, Nasri wants away from the Gunners and Man U seem to have loads of forwards

I've considered this for a couple of days. I was initially quite keen on the idea as it has been mooted on this forum for a number of years and I'm happy that the trust has taken this and run with it.

However, I've a couple of concerns regarding the application of the fund and the timing of the donations.

1. Not quite so happy that a cheque would be handed over and the money to be used as the club see's fit. Regarding signings, Stevenson, yes. Andy Ferguson, no. See where I'm going? I'm not asking that the trust be involved in team affairs at all, knowing some of them - quite the contrary, but I'd be a little concerned about handing over cash which could promptly be wasted.

2. I'd like assurances that the club would not be reliant on this money and that it wouldn't be seen as a guaranteed fund for players. It's one thing occassionaly being approached by the club to help fund players, quite another to be relied upon to do so, i.e. I wouldn't like to think that we could be told "we can sign X if you can supply £Y in January, if not we'll sign nobody".

This is not an attempt to slate what's going on, just some ligitimate concerns and if these are addressed then I will sign up for said fund.

Your concerns have been mentioned elsewhere and it's why we're taking our time with it. We've spoken to other clubs who run similar schemes for instance at East Fife - A fund director (Not necessarily one of the trust board members) meets with the manager and Chairman before a penny is handed over.
The thoughts are that although the Trust is setting this up meetings need to be held by those showing an interest/contributing, not specifically the trust, to put rules and conditions in place.
Taking baby steps - forms went out to allow people to show an interest, hopefully a separate account for this will be set up today and direct debit mandate forms created, then a meeting invite sent out to those who have shown their interest.
