In the first half Airdrie had been playing the ball forward just a bit too quickly completely missing out the midfield. Ronald and Vareille weren't really clicking and McGuire was finding it difficult to pick up scraps to really make our advantage count. A special mention again though for Paul Armstrong who was this time drafted into central midfield to cover for Marv. Armstrong missed a few simple looking passes you'd expect him to get but otherwise he looked superb, breaking up countless Cowdenbeath attacks, and providing a platform for Docherty then later subsitute Gow to attack from central midfield.

Early in the second half Sandy replaced himself with Alan Gow. The youngster went into central midfield with Docherty moving back to sweeper. The move would regenerate Airdrie with Gow bringing out the best in McGuire and fellow sub McKeown with his slick passing and their combined movement. Gow did of course exhibit a few of his trademark mazy runs immediately after entering the match, his ability to nonchelantly drift past a man with ease seemingly improving every game, but it was local hero David McGuire who would fashion the winner for Vareille. McGuire dropped a shoulder, skinned the full back, and centred for Jerome to fire home his first for Airdrie United.

Airdrie could and should have increased the lead during the last twenty minutes as Steve McKeown, on for Vareille, firstly hit the bar, Gow missed the easy looking follow up, then McKeown was hauled back when clean through on goals, possibly in the Fifers' penalty box too, by No.5 Keith Wilson. Inexplicably the ref only cautioned the 'Beath defender, and awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Gow blasted the free kick narrowly over.

Cowdenbeath only really looked a good team when John Elliot came in the last quarter. His clever promptings from the middle had Airdrie under a bit of pressure and one of these move ended in farce and Wilson, who'd just been booked moments earlier was finally sent packing for trying to punch the ball into our net. Justice belatedly. Cowden did still push Airdrie back but Sandy's boys held on comfortably for those crucial three points that see us move to within five points of second place and seven from the lead.
