Lancashire Trophy First Round draw

The first round draw for the Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy has been made, with Genesis handed an intriguing home tie against Vodkat League Division One neighbours Atherton Collieries.

Leigh reached the semi finals of the competition last season but missed out on a visit to the Reebok Stadium for the final after losing to league rivals Clitheroe at Leyland's County Ground.

The fixture against Atherton Collieries will take place at Crilly Park the on Tuesday 28th September (7.45pm kick off), with the league fixture against Cammell Laird to be re-arranged as a result. Admission prices will be confirmed in due course.

The two sides last met in December 2008 at the same stage of the competition, with two Sam Parkinson goals giving Leigh a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Do these County FAs not look at the fixture list before they plan these cup ties. The season hasn't kicked off and already we have matches postponed on 28 Sept and 9 Nov, yet there is a free week on Oct 12th.

Alternatively they should get together with the leagues and allocate specific midweeks for the 1st two rounds of the County Cup games (like the Champions League, Carling Cup etc) before the league fixtures are announced.

Been thinking much the same Paul, but I guess with the sheer number of leagues and counties involved, the county FA's don't fancy the idea. Would certainly make sense to me.

As most teams don't take these cups seriously anyway, there would be a case for playing the 1st round in the week before the season starts.The FA could write to all County FAs and all the leagues saying "this week is for County Cups,please arrange your fixtures accordingly".

What you don't want, yet what you invariably get is like 2 years ago when the Leigh v Colls game was postponed 8 times and stopped both teams playing midweek league games for over 2 months.

Completely agree Paul. Trouble is, I think the league are happy to let the county FA's carry on regardless and vice-versa to be honest. See how this winter goes and take it from there. Would certainly introduce a competitive edge to pre-season games though I'm not sure if it would cause an issue for Goldline clubs?
