Deep freeze forces Rossendale postponement

Despite the best efforts of Leigh Genesis and the staff of the Leigh Sports Village Stadium, this Saturday's home fixture against Rossendale United has been unable to beat the wintry weather and has been postponed.

With minus temperatures in double figures in recent nights meaning that the heavy snowfall of earlier in the week has refused to budge, both the stadium itself and it's surrounding roads are not considered to be in a safe state to host Saturday's fixture, in a similar vein to Leigh Centurions seeing their pre-season friendly against Super League neighbours Salford City Reds being postponed on Tuesday evening.

With virtually the whole country being heavily affected by the weather conditions, the UniBond League allowed it's member clubs to hold inspections much earlier than is normally permitted, with an inspection at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium resulting in what is a somewhat unsurprising postponement on a weekend that is likely to see almost the entire non-league programme wiped out.

It is the fourth game in succession that has been postponed since the 4-1 victory over AFC Fylde at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium on December 19th.

A new date for the Rossendale fixture will be announced in due course, with Leigh's next game being the Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy Quarter Final tie away to Colne on Tuesday (12th January) evening with a 7.45pm kick off, weather permitting.

Think we all expected this.

You'd be struggling to find many games on unless you go up to the higher reaches of the football league

Hardly the biggest shock in the world, this is going to be some fixture backlog.

Don't think there will be many there either when you consider the current hoo-ha about approaches to the ground etc.

Are we taking bets on the chances of the Curzon game being on as well?

The 'experts' seem to think we may have over another week of this.

Then again the 'experts' said we would have a baking hot summer in 2009 and put the chances of us having a cold winter at 1 in 7

I think it's going to be a struggle to be honest Dave, but the best means of preparation is to assume that it's on until we're told otherwise.

Latics spent thousands hiring a snow plough and extra grit...and then the undersoil heating failing!

Your Scottish games should be ok, depending on who you're planning to watch.
