Freescoring Leigh Genesis took their tally to seven goals in two games to launch themselves in to fourth position in the UniBond League First Division North, but it wasn’t without it’s challenges in West Yorkshire against a resolute Ossett Albion side.
With only winger Tom Ince missing from the Leigh line up that secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Warrington Town on Tuesday evening, Jamie Baguley was moved to the left hand side of midfield, with the experienced Andy Heald returning to the side in centre midfield.
With barely seven minutes on the clock, Genesis had a golden opportunity to take the lead when right back Mark Ross, who produced another impressive performance in only his third game for the club, lofted a clever ball that put Chris Thompson clean through on goal, only for his attempt to be deflected wide of the target.
From the resultant corner, Thompson had another go at goal, but was only able to fire the ball over the crossbar after Jamie Baguley's corner was neatly headed down by towering centre back Jonathan Smith.
With twelve minutes gone, Leigh looked likely to take the lead in unexpected circumstances after an admittedly poor Jamie Baguley free kick from the left hand side took a rather fortunate bounce and struck Joe Thornton on the arm inside the penalty area for a Genesis spot kick. However, justice was done in some respects when Steve Flitcroft's strike, although well-placed, from twelve yards was at an ideal height for goalkeeper Neil Bennett to save to his left hand side.
Although the visitors dominated much of the encounter, they had a scare on twenty three minutes when Marc Thompson burst past Smith and thumped a shot against the outside of Stephen Drench's left hand post.
On thirty three minutes, Leigh spurned another goalscoring opportunity when Kris King made a break down the left flank and crossed for Thompson, who's shot was rebounded in to the path of King, who saw his right foot shot palmed away by Bennett.
Against the run of play, Albion took the lead on thirty seven minutes when a ball from the left hand side was headed in to the path of Joe Thornton, allowing the winger to slot his shot past Drench.
However, the pendulum swung hugely back in to the favour of Genesis on forty two minutes when Albion captain Darren Utley was deservedly shown a red card for elbowing Genesis striker Matt Jansen when they challenged for a header.
Barely a couple of minutes after gaining their one-man advantage, Leigh were level again as the first half entered stoppage time when a wonderful Jamie Baguley cross was headed by Jansen for Andy Heald to thunder in to the area and fire past Bennett.
Little more than a minute had passed in the second half before the referee, who left the field to a barrage of abuse from the home supporters at the break, was the centre of attention once again when he awarded the hosts a penalty, ruling that King bundled over Marc Thompson as they attempted to reach a Kyle Cook cross from the left hand side. An equaliser wasn't forthcoming, however, as Drench equalled the heroics of opposite number Bennett by diving to his right hand side and excellent saving Joe Thornton's spot kick.
With Ossett provided a hugely dogged resistance, Leigh needed a stroke of fortune to take the lead on seventy one minutes when Bennett did well to save from Jordan Stepien after he'd latched on to a cross from fellow substitute Chris Baguley, only for Bennett's save to rebound against the luckless Kyle Cook and go straight in to the back of the net.
Twelve minutes later, the points were sealed for Genesis when Jack Dorney gave Jamie Baguley the ball in space, and he threaded a wonderful through ball between two defenders for Stepien to race on to and roll past Bennett.
Only three minutes were left to play when Leigh scored a fourth, this time on the counter attack as Jamie Baguley put brother Chris clear to cut inside on the edge of the area and curl a beautiful shot inside of the far post and in to Bennett's net.
Stepien came within a whisker of a fifth goal for his side when he cheekily attempted to lob Bennett almost virtually from the touchline after a clever Chris Baguley ball, only for Stepien's looping thirty yard strike to land on top of the net.
Ossett substitute Lee Connor pulled a goal back for the Yorkshiremen when he scrambled the ball past Drench in stoppage time, but the game was well won by then.
The three points gives Genesis back-to-back victories and lifts them in to fourth position ahead of a rare free midweek before they make the short trip to Mossley next Saturday (12th September, 3pm).
