On Roger Lewis's appointment Steve Lewis instantly became a sitting duck at the WRU, suffice to say it is not that greater surprise that he has decided to leave.
Personally I despise far flung hierarchal titles such as Director of Elite Performance, as England have shown more layers of blazers largely means more white tape getting in the way. It can either be viewed as sound decision to have a more rugby-centric body at the Unions table or someone to merely deflect pressure off the head honchos themselves.
With Director of Finance and Head of Communications also being introduced by the new chief executive, one has to wonder what Lewis himself will exactly do to justify his considerable salary. However after a year when the union proved themselves to be assertive, but ultimately misjudged and insensitive on a large number of issues, a more thorough, thought through approach is needed.
Any Director of Rugby would be seen as a crucial point of contact between regions and the national team itself, hence we should expect an appointment from within Wales. Looking around though would suggest experienced candidates are few and far between.
