Baggies go out with a bang

It's been some ride for West Bromwich Albion this season.  An 11th place finish gives them their most successful Premiership campaign to date, and yet in January before the arrival of Roy Hodgson, one may well have been forgiven for thinking the Baggies were destined for an end of season relegation dog fight.

Far from it.  The 47 points ensured Albion were 8 points clear of the danger come the final whistle yesterday, although they did their best to achieve full collapse on the last day of the season, slipping to a 3-0 deficit just minutes into the second half.  But Albion, who had lacked their usual attacking flare without Jerome Thomas and Peter Odemwinge, showed real strength and character in the second half; a Tchoyi hatrick sealing their comeback in the 90th minute.

This kind of determination has been typical of Hodgson's Baggies side, but even before his arrival after the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo, Albion had stunned the football world with results such as those at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal, and at Old Trafford against United.  Indeed, Albion remain the only side to have picked up a point at Old Trafford all season.

The season maybe over, but there is unlikely to be a prolonged period of respite for anyone at the Hawthorns, as preparations to better this seasons' achievement get underway ready for the new season in August.

Shame they couldn't finish just one place higher - Apparently there would have been an extra £2 million available for a 10th place finish
