It's an age old classic as far as one liners go, "Oh well, at least we can concentrate on the league now". But does a decent FA Cup run actually deflect from the league? Or does it inspire league confidence? West Bromwich Albion will replay Championship strugglers Reading next week for a place in the 6th Round of the FA Cup, with a tie against either Palace or Villa as the prize.
Two seasons ago West Brom made it to Wembley as FA Cup semi finalists, where they were unfortunate to exit the competition to the eventual winners Portsmouth. That same season they won promotion to the Premiership as Championship winners.
This season however, Roberto Di Matteo is dealing with a fixture pile up as well as a depleated squad after a series of key injuries. So should the Baggies - now top of the Championship table after tonights 1-1 draw with Cardiff City, concentrate on the league - or would a good cup run breed confidence and provide the much needed kick to see them through to the end of the season?
