Roman Bednar has proved to be quite a hit since arriving at the Baggies. He had to wait a while for his chance, but unfortunate injuries to both Phillips and Miller have allowed the on-loan striker to prove why he is everything Albion need. His future at the Hawthorns is yet to be decided, but one thing gaffer Tony Mowbray is sure of, is his ability to prove himself on the international scene.

A summer move to the Hawthorns has been exactly the tonic Bednar needed to re-launch his career.  Despite having some success at Hearts, most notably scoring against Rangers, a fate that earned him a place in the history books at Hearts forever, Bednar struggled to settle.  This was undoubtedly not helped by injury which kept the striker sidelined for a number of weeks.  With his club and international career suffering as a result, the move to Albion has certainly addressed one of those problems. 

So Roman Bednar will take encouragement from Tony Mowbray’s comments today that he believes the big Czech forward stands a good chance of kicking off his international career for the second time.  After making his debut for the Czech Republic on 16^th August 2006, his international career was somewhat marred by the same injury which hindered his progress at Hearts.  But Mowbray believes the 12 goals Bednar has scored in 13 starts for the Baggies will propel him to the forefront of the international scene. 

But Mowbray has warned Bednar to be patient.  His goal to game ration may well be impressive, but Mowbray is cautious that playing in the Championship may well be the wrong league to gain immediate recognition.  He has praised Bednar for his hard work and commitment; qualities which he is certain all involved in the Czech set up will be impressed by.  But after an impressive qualification for the upcoming Euro’s, Mowbray has warned that he faces stiff competition to convince the coaches that changes are needed. 

Mowbray himself has said that he is perfectly happy to not have his on form striker distracted by the prospect of international football.  But Bednar’s position at Albion once his loan spell this summer finished is still unclear.  Albion have already secured the permanent services of Ishmael Miller, and with Kevin Phillips in contract talks it looks as though Bednar will have to wait to fins out if he will become a permanent fixture in the Baggies dressing room.
