Glen Richards wins Mallory Park Race of the Year

In ideal conditions at Mallory Park on Sunday, 16th October 2005, it was the race that everyone had waited for in great anticipation as the riders came out onto the start line.

In front of a crowd not unlike attendance for the British Superbike series when it visits this friendly circuit, it was to be a thriller of a race between the young gun Tommy Hill (Virgin Mobile Samsung Yamaha) and the experienced Glen Richards (Hawk Kawasaki), riding at his ‘home’ circuit.

Tommy got the drive from the off and pulled out a small lead in front of Glen, and it was to be a battle royal to the line, with Glen hard on the heels of Tommy at every corner. Every time the young gun entered the hairpin the crowd were cheering him on - as Glen got closer and closer as each lap unfolded.

Glen never got the better of Tommy until the last time they entered the hairpin, where Tommy went slightly wide and Glen dived under him. Heading off onto the Bus-stop chicane ahead of Tommy, Glen drove hard and, as they entered the start-finish straight, it was Glen who took the honours by half a wheel length.

Glen’s name once again adorns the illustrious Race of The Year Trophy, alongside great names such as John Surtees, Barry Sheene, Mike Hailwood, Kenny Roberts Snr, Bob McIntyre, Giacomo Agostini... - the list is endless, filled with some of the greatest names in motorcycle history.

The trophy dates back to 1958, when the great John Surtees won it for the first time, and is a tribute to our greatest riders.
