The awards for the season 05/06 have been decided, and at long last written up. Up for grabs, Player of the Year, Fans Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and Young Player of the Year.

Most Improved Player

To qualify for this award, the player must’ve been with the Blues for at least two years and have been significantly better this season than ever before. While thinking of the winner for this coveted award, a few names came to mind, but none really stuck out. NICK ROBINSON

The international fly half has shown his class throughout the season, and you can see just how important he is for us when he’s away. His performances have been of very high calibre and he has built on work in previous seasons to really command the number 10 shirt, and make a genuine push for Steven Jones’ sport with Wales. Congratulations Nikcy!

 

Young Player of the Year

Players considered must be 21 or younger and have made a good impact in the team this season. Duane Goodfeild was a serious contender for this title with some outstanding performances, and often keeping Welsh hooker Rhys Thomas on the bench. He has displaced Gareth Williams and has held his own against the likes of Saracens and Wasps. However, he was beaten fairly by the supurb…

 

CHRIS CZEKAJ

 

Chris has been in magnificent form all year, and has clearly learnt a lot from the experience of one Jonah Lomu. His finest performance came in the home match against the Ospreys, where he turned Shane Williams inside out and left Jon Thomas on his bum to score a brilliant hat-trick. He picked up a total of 9 tries this year, and was the top try scorer in a very successful season. Well done, and keep it up Chris.

 

Fans Player of the Year

Over the last two weeks you’ve been voting for your Player of the Year, and I can now reveal who that player is. 128 people voted, and with 32% of that vote, the Fans Player of the Year is…

 

MAAMA MOLTIKA

 

Beating Mike Phillips by 5% Maama deservedly picks up an award for a season in which he’s contributed massively. The giant flanker has been a rock in the team this, and has been crucial in securing ball’s from re-starts as well as bringing a bit of dogged attitude to side. He’s been utilised best at 6 over the season, and will now be a very hard player to replace. He’s now taking up a contract with a Japanese rugby side. All the fans wish to thank you for you’re efforts this year, and wish you the best of luck with your new venture. Cheers Maama.

The biggest prize of the lot gets decided by me, and I can assure you, it’s been a very difficult task. In what has been the Blues most successful season so far, the whole team deserves a mention, and our very grateful thanks. We’ve been delighted with 5 wins out of 6 games against Welsh teams, and have memorable matches, home and away against the Ospreys in particular, to savour over the next few years We’re the best team in Wales, results and the table don’t lie. So how do I pick one name from a fabulous bunch? Well, if I have to choose…

 

MIKE PHILLIPS

 

What a signing! Mikey has brought so much to this side, his direct running, excellent distribution, and aggressive nature have been key in our success this year. He’s picked up 5 tries along the way, and has formed a formidable partnership with Nick Robinson. Both are just 23, and have a long future with the region, and what a future it looks like it’s going to be. Xavier Rush, Nick Robinson and for me Marc Stcherbina came close to winning, but it was the impact Mike’s had and his never say die attitude that have shone through to win. There have been times this year when we looked off the boil and under the cosh with a small lead or loss, last season we would’ve folded and lost altogether, but Phillips has been the difference in the two seasons. What a player! Congratulations Mike Phillips!
