Edwards to Combine Blues and Wales Role?

Edwards to the Blues?

Cardidd Blues chairman, Peter Thomas, announces that the region are keen to sign out-of-contract coach, Shaun Edwards in a combined Wales and Blues role...

Thomas - who has been very vocal in the media in recent weeks since the high profile signing of Gavin Henson - told BBC Wales,

"I've spoken to the Welsh Rugby Union and registered a very strong interest in Shaun Edwards coming in to do a defensive role. I know Warren Gatland would not have a problem with it and I've asked the Welsh Rugby Union to give it very serious consideration."

However the role wouldn't be as head coach, as many had expected, but instead as a part-time de3fense coach, combining his role with Wales.

"We wouldn't have a position full-time at Cardiff Blues for Shaun Edwards and he knows that and he doesn't want that. He would work alongside both Justin and Gareth."

The Blues have previously been linked with Grahame Henry - a rumour which has since been quashed by Thomas - as well as England's attack coach, Brian Smith. However it seems that Edwards is the man wanted by Blues bosses.

The main stumbling block will be whether Edwards decides to remain with Wales or look elsewhere. In a recent Wales Online interview, Gatland seemed to suggest that Edwards may wish to explore options nearer his family in London. A similar dual Club-International role may yet be offered from over the bridge, although it appears England are waiting to see the outcome of their World Cup review before making any rash decisions.

The race for Edwards is most definitively hotting up...

I think we're very unlikely to see him coaching the blues.

In great timing this morning Delme in the Western Mail has written a big piece on how we are losing Shaun Edwards and will have to get used to it. His facts seem to be nothing more than nobody has told Delme what is happening yet. The fantastic timing is that as he published this piece, Stephen Jones in the Times has said that Shaun has signed for Wales again. Great news if true.

It's also been reported in today's "The Rugby Paper" that S Edwards has re-signed for Wales until 2015. Now national defence coach -- for Wales u16s, u18s, and U20s too, it is reported.
