Lucky Strike BAR Honda star driver Jenson Button's podium finish in today's inaugural Chinese Grand Prix ensures that he will take third place overall in the Drivers World Championship. While Michael Schumacher was crowned champion some weeks ago, the battle for the remaining places continued unabated. Going into the Chinese Grand Prix weekend 27 points behind second placed Rubens Barrichello, Jenson wasn't too confident of being able to overhaul the Brazilian.



"I think I would have to win two races," explained Button, "and I haven't won a race yet – so that could be a little bit difficult – and have a second place. I think I would be dreaming if I said I could."

With Barrichello leading the Shanghai event from lights to flag, Jenson's remote hope vanished entirely, leaving him to worry about retaining third in the championship. A 26 point margin over Renault rival Fernando Alonso was good, but not unbeatable.

The second place finish elevated him a further three points clear of the Spaniard, who now lies 29 points behind, with only 20 left to gather.

With his own personal targets sorted out, focus now moves to helping BAR retain their second place in the Constructors Championship. With Renault just 9 points behind, and with 36 points still available, BAR will need continue beating Renault.

Renault have been outscored by BAR at every event since the British Grand Prix, but one engine failure could, conceivably, be enough to seal the teams fate. However, the current unsettled state at Renault, with Trulli leaving and Villeneuve coming in, is sure to play into BAR's hands.

BAR are testing at Jerez this week, with Davidson and Bernoldi, in a bid to get yet more performance from the 006, and secure the runner up slot.
