The matches, which take place in Argentina, see Wales in seeding pool D, along with Australia and Canada with Wales playing New Zealand, Scotland and Argentina in their three pool games before the semi-final play-off on 21st June to decide final table ranking.

The Ponty Lads:

The Wales under 21 squad to fly out to Argentina for their World Cup tournament this summer, has now been finalised, with five of last season’s Pontypridd squad selected for the trip.

Winger Richard Fussell - who will depart Ponty during the close season to take up a development contract with the Newport Gwent Dragons - centre Dafydd Lockyer, outside half Dai Flanagan, hooker Duane Goodfield and flanker Rhys Shellard, are all rewarded for their impressive form over the past season, by being included in the final twenty-six man squad. Ponty fitness coach Steve Richards will also make the trip, with senior coach Simon King flying out to join up with the party as assistant coach, alongside Wales coach Mike Ruddock, following the senior squad tour of Canada and the USA. The under 21 squad are due to set out for Argentina on 4th June.

The World Cup touring party will be led by senior coaches Dai Rees, of Newport, and Chris Davey of UWIC, with Blues Academy director Justin Burnell also amongst the back up team.

Centre Tom Riley has been extremely unlucky to miss out on the under 21 World Cup, having withdrawn to undergo surgery to rectify a long standing shoulder injury. Full back Morgan Stoddart was also in the frame for selection, having made a big impact during his first season in the premiership with Ponty, but just failing the final cut. Stoddart will remain on stand by, ready for a call up to join the under 21 squad, whilst still recovering from the effects of a leg injury which blighted the latter end of his season.

An encouraging factor for both club and country is that the Pontypridd contingent of Lockyer, Flanagan, Goodfield and Shellard are all a year below the age group, and will again be available for the Wales under 21s next season.

Chris Davies who has signed for the Dragons makes the squad after a promising season for Bridgend, Chris is a talented athlete and would have learnt a lot this season.

Scott Roberts didn’t get much game time for Bridgend but has been in good form for the 21s, his future is unknown with moves to the Blues or back to Ponty both touted.

Unlucky not to make it were centre Chris Tossell and scrum half Nicky Griffiths who were in outstanding form for Bridgend and a big part of the Ospreys U20s side.
