Scottish Division Three: Saturday 21 September 2002. Links Park, Montrose. Montrose 2 (Kerrigan 7, C Webster 62) Morton 5 (McDonald 11, Hawke 24, Uotinen 46, M Maisano 47, Uotinen 75)
Montrose were comprehensively thumped in this embarrassing display.
It all began so well, when Chris Webster robbed a Morton defender on the right bye line and sent over an inch perfect cross to the far post for Kerrigan to nod home after 7 minutes. Keith Gibson should have made it 2 for the Mo when he booted over the bar from 6 yards.
Morton came quickly back into the game and it was looking like an excellent match, with both sides making chances. However, Gary McGlynn went into self-distruct mode as he attempted to shepherd the ball over the bye line for a goal kick. The Morton striker was too quick for him and the keeper brought him down to concede a free kick. Morton went ahead from it with a glancing header. Morton's John Maisano was the top man and he tormented the Montrose defence.
We hoped for better things in the second half, but were stunned when Morton scored twice within two minutes of the restart. David Robertson was left slumped on the turf with what looked like a serious injury, and he was stretchered off. David Craig came over to the left and Kevin Webster came on to the right wing. His presence made an immediate impact and he dribbled fully 60 yards to cross the ball for Chris Webster to coolly slot home at the far post. It certainly left us wondering why he wasn't on from the start. Soon after, Chris Webster was upended in the box, but the referee had a good view and waved play on. It was inevitable that there would be spaces at the back as we tried to push forward, and Morton finished the job with another goal with around 15 minutes to go.
Only Chris Webster, Steve Kerrigan and Kevin Webster deserve pass marks for their performances in today's game. Too many passes went astray, balls miskicked, and the defence was a shambles.
This result leaves us in seventh spot in the league.
