Once Upon a time

Anfield – Not our best away trip over the years. In fact we have only won there 7 times in our history. In all competitions we have played 139 times before today and we have only won 39 of them. Anfield – Not our best away trip over the years. In fact we have only won there 7 times in our history. In all competitions we have played 139 times before today and we have only won 39 of them. The League Cup is the only competition we have bettered them over the years with 3 wins in the 6 meetings.

So it will be tough, but no tougher than 16th March 1985 when we went to Anfield having not won there for 73 years and Garth Crooks scored the goal that laid one of the longest top flight ghosts to rest. Hard to believe that it was as far back as 1912 when we had last won at Anfield. When on the 16th March when Ernie Newman and Someone called Mason scored two goals with no reply to ensure us a win.

Before that we had only won up there once before and that was on 29th October 1910 and on that day the score was 2-1 to the Spurs with Percy Humphreys and Billy Minter getting the goals for us in front of a 12,000 crowd.

The first time the two clubs met in the Football League was on 13th November 1909 at White Hart Lane when Bert Middlemiss scored the only goal of the game. In doing so he became the first Spurs player to score against both of the Merseyside clubs,

Liverpool became the first side to score seven against Spurs in the leagues in 1914 on 31st October when we lost 7-2 at Anfield and who can forget their performance at Anfield on 2nd September 1978 when they again scored 7, this time with no reply. They were of course a great side and I have always said that their performance on that day would have beaten anybody 7-0 they were that good.

We have put seven past them in between though (albeit at home) as in 1963 on 15th April in front of 53,727, Cliff Jones (With two), Frank Saul and a foursome from Jimmy Greaves saw us record a fine 7-2 win.

When did we last win a league game at Anfield?. The answer to that is 25th August 1993 when Teddy Sheringham scored twice (once from the spot) to give us a 2-1 win. We have of course won up there twice since. 2-1 in the FA Cup in March 1995 when Klinsmann scored that late winner. And then again in the League Cup in November 1998. This was a 3-1 win with Steffen Iversen, John Scales and Allan Nielsen getting the goals. John Scales having the delight of scoring against his former club.

So, we do not do well up there normally and if I am brutally honest, I do not expect us to do well today but maybe, just maybe, it is our turn to record what would only be our eighth win at Anfield.
