We will mention EVERY victory Spurs have had over Liverpool at Anfield.

That’s right, every victory to make this a really long column this time round. Actually all that means is we are going to look at seven games. That’s right, we have only won at Anfield, in any competition seven times and the most recent of these was back on 10th November 1998. Our biggest ever win at Anfield was that 3-1 victory with goals from Steffan Iverson, John Scales and Allan Nielson. Three years before that we visited Anfield for a FA 6th round tie. (incidentally that was the last time I was at Anfield) and who could forget the scenes of jubilation when Jurgen Klinsmann score the winner with seconds left on the clock. The score witnessed by a 39,582 crowd that day was 2-1 to Spurs and the other goal was scored by Teddy Sheringham.

Teddy was also largely responsible for the victory that preceded that and which took place on 25th August 1993. Once again we won by 2 goals to one, only this time Teddy scored both goals, one from the Penalty spot. And witnessed by a Premiership crowd of 42,456.

Lets now move back to the 1st October 1986. We visited Anfield and not only won – we kept a clean sheet as well. 1-0 was the final score and Clive Allen was watched by 43,139 as he scored the winner. The ‘win at Anfield a year earlier, 16th March 1985 saw a 43,852 crowd watch as Garth Crooks scored the only (and winning) goal of the game.

To find a victory at Anfield before that one has to go back a further 73 years to the day when on the 16th March 1912 saw a 15,000 Anfield crowd witness a 2-1 scoreline in Spurs favour. Some places list this as a 4-1 win so any information confirming this would be appreciated as always. I only have details of two scorers so the 2-1 is quite probable and they went by the names of Newman and Mason.

The only other victory at Anfield was two years earlier on 29th October 1910. we won this game 2-1 in front of 12,000 spectators. Billy Minter and Percy Humphreys getting the two goals.

I didn’t know much about Percy Humphreys and I doubt you do either so I thought we’d have a quick resume of his career. Centre or inside-forward was born in Cambridge on 3rd December 1880. He played for Cambridge St. Mary’s and Cambridgeshire County before joining Queens Park Rangers in 1900. A year later he was off to Notts County. He had a spell at Leicester Fosse and Chelsea before moving to Spurs in December 1909. Whilst at Spurs he scored a goal every two games (29 in 54 appearances). He left Spurs to return to Leicester in 1911 and in 1913 he became player-manager of Hartlepool United before he took up a coaching position in Switzerland. He returned to assist Norwich for the last season before the Great War. His only international honour was when he represented England against Scotland in April 1903 playing alongside Vivian Woodward. He died in Stepney, London on 13th April 1959.


So there you have it, since our first meeting in the League in 1909 we have only won at Anfield seven times. In this seasons Champions League campaign Liverpool have won only 2 of the 9 games that followed the CL game. Lets repeat our limited success and make it 2 out of 10 Champions League hangovers for the Scousers.
