I covered the West Bromwich Albion 'previous' for the first game so a we'll have a look at some other Spurs related cup facts. In 1901 when we won the cup for the first time we played Reading in the third round at Elm Park. With time running out the score was 1-1 when Sandy Tait punched the ball out from the goal-line. None of the officials saw it and the referee awarded a goal kick to Readings dismay. The game ended 1-1 with a John Kirwan goal and we went on to win the Replay 3-0, Goals from Sandy Brown (two) and David Copeland securing the win.

In 1904 we were at home to Aston Villa in the 2nd Round and in front of 32,000 supporters Villa were leading 1-0 when twenty minutes into the game hundreds of supporters spilled onto the pitch. The referee eventually abandoned the game after 38 minutes and a replay at Villa Park was ordered. We won that game 1-0 with a John Jones goal.

In 1913 in the 1st round we were drawn at home to Blackpool on 11th January. We drew this game 1-1, Charles Rance scoring our goal. We then persuaded Blackpool to switch the replay to White Hart Lane on 16th January and we won this replay 6-1 with two goals apiece from Walter Tattershall and James Cantrell and one each from Bob Steel and Bert Middlemiss.

A year later on 10th January 1914 we played a first round match away to Leicester Fosse and it was a thrilling 5-5 draw. Walden, Minter, Cantrell and two for Bliss on that occasion. The replay at White hart Lane on 15th January ended 2-0 to the Spurs with Fanny Walden and Bert Bliss providing the goals.

The fourth round in 1938 saw us play out a 0-0 draw with New Brighton in front of 13,029 spectators at their Sandheys Park ground on 22nd January. The replay at the Lane on 26th January saw us win 5-2 with Johnny Morrison and Jack Gibbins scoring twice each in front of 36,004 fans. West Brom reject Colin Lyman scored the fifth. Although New Brighton were a league side from 1923 to 1951 we never played them in the league and these two cup games were our only encounters with them.

A quick look at one more 4th round encounter now and on the 30th January 1960, 20,000 fans saw us draw 2-2 with Crewe Alexandra, Les Allen and Cliff Jones getting their names on the scoresheet. Little did anyone know that the replay at White Hart Lane on the 3rd February would enter the record books. We led 10-1 at half time and then eased off in the second half as we finished 13-2 winners. 5 goals for Les Allen, 4 goals for Bobby Smith, 3 for Cliff Jones (including a penalty) and one from Tommy Harmer ensured our record victory.

One other curious story about that day. The party from Crewe arrived that morning by train at Euston on platform 2. They left that evening from platform 13 and arrived back in Crewe at thirteen minutes past two in the morning.

Poor old Crewe, we walloped them 5-1 in the fourth round at White Hart Lane the following year as well.


Now lets repeat the run down of the Cup winning years,

1901 and in what was then the second round and our opponents at home on 23rd February were Bury. We won this match 2-1 in front of 20,250 paying customers with Sandy Brown scoring both goals.

1921 and another 2nd round game at White Hart Lane on the 29th January. The opponents were Bradford City. This was a game we won 4-0. with a Jimmy Seed hat-trick and a goal from Jimmy Banks.

1961 and our third Round opponents on 28th January were Crewe Alexandra. 63,721 were at the lane to see a 5-1 victory with five different scorers. Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones, Bobby Smith, Les Allen and Terry Dyson.

The following year (1962) we were drawn away to Plymouth Argyle on 27th January and another 5-1 win. Goals this time supplied by Terry Medwin, John White, two from Jimmy Greaves and one from Cliff Jones.

On to 18th February 1967 next and a home game against Portsmouth. 57,910 saw us win this one 3-1 with Greaves and Gizean (twice) getting on the scoresheet.

1981 and it was Hull Citys turn to be knocked out of the cup at White hart Lane by a team that won 2-0 with Steve Archibald and Garry Brooke finding the net.

On the 23rd January 1982 a crowd of 46,126 saw Garth Crooks score the only goal in the home tie against Leeds United

And the last time we won the cup 1991 our third round opponents (Once again at the Lane) were Oxford United. A game we did not have entirely our own way but we won in the end by the score 4-2. Goals on this occasion were provided by Gary Mabbutt, Gary Lineker and a brace for Gazza.
