Making his debut against the Indians in late 2001, it was hoped that "Fozzie" would prove a long-term replacement for Alec Stewart, who decided not to tour, but to spend time with his family.

As it happened, in the test matches he performed relatively well with the bat, and whilst he did not pull up any trees, he showed that he could become a quality player. However, his glove-work behind the stumps was not up to the expected standard, with missed stumpings and catches being well picked up on by the media.

Foster has recently lost his place in the side to Alex Stewart, due to a broken arm, and England's senior pro' is back in the runs. At the moment it will be difficult for Foster to regain his place, but with a current batting average of 28.71 in test cricket and 14 catches and a stumping, Foster seems certain to play for England again at some point.
