Giles claimed three for 25 in 10 overs and was also involved in a run-out as the BCB were beaten by 167 runs at the National Stadium in the tourists' only run out before the start of the one-day series at Chittagong on Friday.

Having finished with only one wicket during the 2-0 Test series whitewash, Giles needed an improved display to press his claims for inclusion in the one-day series and delivered just that as England dismissed the BCB XI for a lowly 161.

Attempting to concentrate on cricketing matters despite the growing controversy about the unrest in Sri Lanka and their impending tour there, England recorded an imposing score of 328.

They were given a flying start with Vikram Solanki and Andrew Strauss sharing a 146-run opening stand in only 20 overs to give England the foundation for an even more formidable score.

But once they fell in successive overs, the tourists lost their momentum despite a quickfire 43 from only 31 balls from stand-in captain Andrew Flintoff, leading the side in the absence of the rested Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick, and a powerful 62 from Ian Blackwell.

Instead of building on their promising start, which was dominated by a superb 79 from 63 balls from Worcestershire batsman Solanki, England lost their way and lost their last six wickets for 68 runs.

The BCB XI were little better in reply and suffered an early loss with Mohammad Ashraful, the youngest-ever player to score a Test match century, driving James Kirtley straight to Anthony McGrath at mid-off.

That was followed seven overs later when Flintoff struck in his second over to remove opener Humayuan Kabir, who edged behind to wicketkeeper Chris Read trying to drive off the front foot.

Then Giles took over to impress watching captain Vaughan and coach Duncan Fletcher ahead of Friday's opening international, claiming two wickets in one over at one stage, and put England on course for a comprehensive victory.
