3rd for Hamilton after Trulli penalised

By Syco Bill
March 29 2009

After awakening at 5.00am by mistake awaiting for F1, my enthusiasm for the first ever race was underway. For us Brits, it was great to see F1 back on the BBC, with no interruptions, although the intro could be worked on. Anyway, as the race started Lewis Hamilton had a lot of work to do, as he started from 18th, due to a gear box change that saw him demoted to 18th place in qualifying yesterday.

Lewis was able to bring himself up to 11th by the second lap. He continued to attack his McLaren-Mercedes to its full potential and even beyond to bring himself up to 4th by the end of the race.

When Kubica and Vettel (who I had bets on to win) crashed out at turn 3 with only 3 laps to go, making me very angry and making the safety car deploy. The official timings however claimed that Hamilton was 3rd, but suddenly changed to 4th.
After the race, officials have decided to penalise Juano Trulli and smack him with a 25 second penalty leaving him feeling low in twelth place. Trulli had apparently according to sources slid of the track after managing to retain his 3rd spot behind the safety car allowing Hamilton through. Trulli obviously thought that he was entitled to retake his position and overtook Hamilton during the safety car, which is not allowed.

The McLaren Mercedes team also saw Hekki Kovalinen have to retire after the turn one incident involving him knocking into Reubens Barrichello who then pushed into Mark Webber, who took out Nick Heidfeld and forced the Spaniard Alonso to vacate the incident using the grass.

In conclusion in this race we have seen that the McLaren Mercedes team have a lot of work to do to be as fast as the Brawn GP team, however with Lewis able to overtake using his supreme skills, we could see McLaren back at the top soon. Hopefully Hekki still has the fighting spirit in him.

Jarno has a very selective memory. The reason he was penalized is because he went off the track. After he went off the track, Lewis passed him. After he returned to the track, he just figured that he had the right to pass Lewis back.

He figured wrong.

Hard luck, but still a great drive from Trulli. Kimi looks to have continued last years carelessness.

Well done Lewis, that was a champions drive..

I'm not too sure about it being a below average car, but you do make a very good point.

Personally, I was just hoping like hell he could secure a point or two...and I wasn't really sure if he could do it or not.

I was VERY happy with 4th. A fantastic result. To get 3rd the way he did isn't what you like to see, but that's racing. I'll take it.

Trulli went off the track then passed under a yellow. - Not Hamiltons fault. For once the stewards got it right.

err hello

today hamilton admits mcclaren told him to let trulli pass

'Let Trulli through', McLaren told Hamilton
30 March 2009 / Results / Photos

Lewis Hamilton has explained that his team instructed him to allow Jarno Trulli to repass him during the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. Trulli, who finished third at the end of the race, was handed a 25-second penalty for passing the McLaren under safety car conditions on the penultimate lap of the race.

The confusion between the two drivers began at the end of lap 56, when the safety car had been deployed follow the collision between Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica. Trulli - running third - overshot at Turn 15, skipping across the grass as Hamilton passed the Totota which, in turn, retook his position behind the safety car, claiming that the the World Champion's McLaren slowed and moved off the racing line, as if with a technical problem.

With the Italian devastated over the loss of his third place, Hamilton gave his view of events to SpeedTV: "I was behind Trulli under the safety car, and clearly you're not allowed to overtake under the safety car but he went off in the second to last corner - he went wide and onto the grass, I guess his tyres were cold. I slowed down as much as I could, but was forced to go by. I was then told to let him back past, but I don't know if that's in the regulations and, if it isn't, I should really have had third on the road."

What a farce.

Well, I think Lewis did the right thing. Last season we have seen Lewis penalised on every possible (and some impossible) occasions, so it is no wonder the team wants to play it safe...

Err Hello,

just bcause the team told him to let trulli pass dont mean that trulli was allowed to under the rules.

They were behind the safety car. Not McLarens call.

What was he supposed to do? Stop?
Hamilton clearly slowed and pulled to the side, so Trulli WOULD overtake him.

if anyone thinks trulli pulled a overtaking monouver needs thier heads examining.

Trulli knew he lost his 3rd place fair and square but when hamilton is told slow down and move aside and let trulli through, is trulli supposed to just stop on the track?

no he should have slowed...then passed when LH was 10 car lengths further behind the car in front..then he has a clear problem and is breaching the running behind the safety car rules...AND then talked to his team to check he was ok...perhaps checked with Charlie Whiting but as we know thats not a very good opinion of what is right and wrong...

Now this new evidence has been released, it clearly shows that Lewis let him pass. The stewards should re-look at this and maybe just demote Trulli to 4th. Thats totally unfair on Trulli.

But no macca had to be dumb about it.

Are you blaming McLaren for Trulli being less than competant in keeping his car on the road?? Surely it was dumb to drive off the road at less than racing speed behind a saftey car...then allow yourself to be conned into repassing a competitor and then not finding out if you ought to let him back past before the end of the race?? I think both teams were dumb, too catious etc...unless mcLaren were being clever and conned Trulli into a mistake that cost him valuable points at the end of the season??
There are two sides to every story and you come here moaning about McLaren as usual....Perhaps the drivers behind LH thought Trulli should have stayed off the track until they had all gone past or he might have caused an avoidable accident coming back on into the train of cars behind the saftey car...

Clearly mclarens fault? Have a day off mate its was trulli that caused the confusion. Mclaren just played it safe, toyota should have asked the question immediately then that would have gave trulli a chance to let lewis go back past.

Well I think McLaren are at fault for letting him back past, but then Toyota should have gone to the stewards and asked for their opinion. Also due to using slicks, it is harder to keep the tyres warm, making it harder to stay on the track.
Confusion was met at the GP but it could have easily been sorted by putting Trulli 4th and promoting Hamilton to 3rd.

Don't forget guy's it was Mclaren that filed the complaint against Trulli.

This thing smells. Who does this sort of things, first saying that Hamilton has to stop and let Trulli pass and then file a complaint against Trulli for passing him.

The stuwards wouldn't have done anyting against it if it wasn't becouse of mclaren Complaint.

I accept that Trulli is now 12 and Hamilton is now 3. This is sport and in sport there will alway's be people or teams cheating there way up.

The stewards are the real people to blame here.

Due to their unfair treatment of McLaren at every opportunity these last few years [since they started challenging Ferrari], the McLaren team has become very nervous about being punished for the slightest thing.

Thats why, when Lewis passed trulli, [even though trulli ran off track] they erred on the side of caution and told Lewis to let him re-pass.

It happened so quick, maybe the engineer didn't see trulli off track and thought they would get DQ'd

That is my precise thought as well. But the fact of the matter is, it's not McLaren's job to let Trulli know where he should or shouldn't be.

It's Toyota's job to see to it that they do the right thing, no matter what McLaren does.

I have been a McLaren fan for all my life and last year I supported Hamilton 100 % for the title. He really deserved it and I was soooo happy. But now McLaren pay back with lies and cheat against Jarno Trulli and if Jarno don't is given back his 3:rd position (his right), I will sadly change my opinion about McLaren. That is really sad after all the years I loved the team and the drivers in the team. I still will be happy for Hamiltons last year, but this year also Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button will drive for WDC, and Jarno is my greatest hero in Formula 1, after Riccardo Patreses all fantastic years.

1. Jenson Button 2. Rubens Barrichello 3. Jarno Trulli 4. Lewis Hamilton 5. Timo Glock

That is it.
