McLaren’s chief executive Martin Witmarsh has stated that Lewis may go for the driver’s championship this season, with both McLaren drivers leading the driver’s championship.

This season’s Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver line up looks to be the most impressive one since, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard legendary line up in the mid 1990’s.

In years to come it could be more successful than the driver line up of Ayrton Senna and Alan Prost that McLaren had in the late 1980’s. But this is now, and the team look certain to get at least one championship, well… we hope they do.

"At the moment there are three co-leaders so they're all championship contenders," Whitmarsh said. "We wouldn't have puit Lewis in the car unless we thought that he was going to be a real contender this year."

"We don't want to put any additional pressure on him though," he added. "He's dealing with it all amazingly and he'll want to win the next race in Spain. He will win raes this year and there's no reason he can't challenge for the championship."

Whitmarsh went on to say that Fernando Alonso should not be forgotten. "Fernando is a great competitor and he is also very much a contender for the title again this year."

Triple world champion Jackie Stewart has backed up Martins statement by agreeing with him.

Stewart told BBC: "It's not inconceivable it could be done this year because McLaren look like the team to beat. If not, expect it within the next three. He is, of course, driving for one of the best teams in the world at the present time, with a competitive car, but nevertheless he's been able to accomplish more in a shorter time than any driver I've ever seen enter Formula One."
