McLaren Get Smart

The letter was written by McLaren's engineering director Paddy Lowe, in by doing so, the FIA were able to wise up to teams trying to flaunt Article 3.17.4, where bodywork, in this particular case, the floor, can deflect more than 5mm vertically when subjected to a 500 Newton load upward.

So after the not so quiet word in the ear of the FIA regarding Renaults controversial mass dampers, McLaren changed tactics.

Instead of playing whistle blower and incurring the wrath of a raging over perspiring Italian, McLaren took the diplomatic route.

Instead of asking the FIA to investigate the floor mounting systems deployed by BMW and Ferrari, McLaren took the unusual route of asking for permission to instil such a devise on the McLaren.

The FIA now plan to update their bodywork tests to see whether all teams are complying faithfully to the rules.

From a McLaren fans point of view, this is a refreshing change, instead of naming and shaming these little rascals and incurring the reputation of whistle blower, we have opted for the more subtle approach by instead of ratting them out, asking if we can join in their fun.

At the end of the day, the same outcome prevailed, however this time, we don’t play grass.
