It was all smiles yesterday at Mclaren, with the Woking team announcing a profit of $23 million for the financial year of 2005, after recording a net loss of $2 million the year before. F1 team McLaren's parent company, McLaren Group, recorded a profit last year of nearly $23 million, according to accounts filed at Companies House in the UK.

Led by team principal Ron Dennis, the firm made a loss of $2m in 2004. The sale of more than 1000 Mercedes-Benz SLR supercars is almost certainly responsible for the boost according to GMM.

Total turnover was believed to be in the region of $422 million, it rose from $406m in 2004 and $297m in 2003.

Responding to the figures, Dennis described 2005 as an 'excellent year', despite failing to win either formula one title.

It was suggested by some, such a Peter Day, hotel heiress Paris Hilton's arrest for drink driving in her £300,000 Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, has been good news for the company.

In the first year of full year of production, The Mclaren Group turned the $2 million deficit to a $23 million pound profit, according to the GMM.

With more than 1,000 SLR's built, chairman and chief executive Ron Dennis was quick to point it was one of the best-selling supercars ever.
