Jelena changed her Australian nationality for the Yugoslavian after a conflict with the Australian Tennis Federation.

In Rome Jelena won her first Sanex WTA title defeating Mauresmo in the final.

Seeded for a Grand Slam for the first time at no. 15 of the 2001 French Open. Jelena got her first pro career double bagel in her first round match against Hersi.

Reached the 2001 Roland Garros double finals with Martinez.

Jelena won her second WTA singles title at the 2001 Tokyo Princess Cup beating Clijsters and Sanchez-Viccario.

In Moscow she got her third career title beating Dementieva in the final.
Jelena reached the finals in Linz and Zurich, five finals in the last six events.
