Sixth seed Vera Zvonareva was struggling to get the ball in and was making far to many unforced errors. Hitting 15 double faults was probably the key factor for losing the match.

In the first game Zvonareva breaks at 30-40 with a good winner but she sees fellow countrywoman Likhovtseva rebreak after hitting errors and Zvonareva’s first double fault. In the fifth game Zvonareva again broke with a winner but again gets a rebreak for 3 all as an answer, this two double fault help Likhovtseva on her way. In the eight game Likhovtseva takes a 5-3 lead when she break takes advantage of yet again a double fault and bad play by Zvonareva.

The Kazakhstan born Likhovtseva wins her game and the first set in 32 minutes, 6-3. The 29-year-old sees her 9 years younger opponent have a better game in the second set. Both break and rebreak until they reach a 5 all score.

In the 11th game of the second set Zvonareva hits ball wide and long. At 15-40 she hits two service winners and is on deuce. Not keeping her serves as good as the previous two she hits a double fault and Likhovtseva takes advantage and the break when Zvonareva hits her last double fault of the match.

Elena Likhovtseva serves to win the match, again Zvonareva is making the mistakes and not Likhovtseva hitting the winners. Hitting the ball in the net, hitting the ball long and again in the net Zvonareva handed this game over to her compatriot and Likhovtseva wins in three sets in 81 minutes, 6-3, 7-5.

American Lilia Osterloh, the 26-years-old No.126 of the WTA ranking was making life not easy in the first set of her match against Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova. The 21-year-old No.34 could not find a way to fight back against Osterloh. The first set started of with a double fault hit by Hantuchova; her second service was an ace. Hantuchova’s play was going up and down and never got to the level that she could impress Osterloh. Osterloh won the first set in 40 minutes 6-3 both players didn’t play their best tennis.

In the second set Daniela Hantuchova showed that she was the better player of the two but still not very convincing. Hantuchova did have a lot of opportunities but could not take advantage. The score suggests a far better Hantuchova but in fact she was just a little better winning the second 6-2.

Hantuchova started to show her skills as late as in the third set. Not waiting for her opponent to make mistakes as she did in the second set, she took the match into her own hands. Starting to hit winners, aces and attacking more than in previous sets. It showed in the score, the Slovakian who is making her fourth appearance at Filderstadt, leads 4-0 and wins the final set 6-1. Final score 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in 1 hour and 48 minutes.
