Jelena
Kostanic from Split, Croatia started out the better player, hitting more
winners, two aces and making fewer mistakes. In 34 minutes she had won the
first set breaking Ruano Pascual in the second and the fourth game. After
losing her service the fifth game she regained a steady lead by taking the
seventh game away from the Spaniard. The 23 years old Croat held serve to win
the first set 6-3.

Both
players were more equal to each other in the second set. In the eight game at 4
all they showed how equal they really were at that point, the game lasted over
20 minutes. At 40-30 Kostanic had the chance to break but failed. This was the
beginning of 10 times deuce, breakpoints and game points. Fighting for every
point both players played good winners and bad errors. In the end Ruano Pascual
held her service for 5-4. Kostanic tying for 5 all lead up to a love game for
6-5 and a love game for 6 all.
In the
tiebreak they didn’t get hold of their service and lost it one after another.
At 3-4 Ruano Pascual held serve for the first time for 5-3, she hits a forehand
volley for 6-3 and when Kostanic hits the ball into the net the Spaniard wins
the second set. 7-6 (3).

After changing her shirt Ruano Pascual got the better end of the match in the deciding third set. Even though she lost her first service game she came back taking the Croatian serve and breaking her twice for a 3-2 lead on love. She managed to hold her own serve for a comfortable 4-2 lead and giving Kostanic more trouble than she did in the first set. At 5-3 Ruano Pascual had her first matchpoint after 2 hours and 25 minutes of play. Kostanic fought back for 5-4 but she could not prevent Ruano Pascual holding her for a 3 sets win ending the match 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
