Belgium Kim Clijsters defeats Jennifer Capriati of the USA in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Clijsters, who is the defending champion, will meet the winner of the match between Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo. Kim Clijsters had to face some resistance in the first set when Jennifer Capriati took a 1-0 lead.

Capriati needed medical treatment on her right hip and never picked up the game she showed in the first set. She lost the second set and started to show problems walking around the court in the third set.

Kim Clijsters took the first matchpoint that came around and won the match.
