Serena Williams was made to raise her game against Ai Sugiyama for a quarter-final berth against Amelie Mauresmo who cruised past Magui Serna Wililams the defending champion was 4-2 down in the first set against the Japanese 16th seed was forced to dig deep all way through the match eventually winning the first set 7-5. The second set seemed easy for Williams going into an early 2-0 lead but was pegged back for 2-2 as the 16th seed resistance decreased allowing Serena to advance 7-5, 6-3.

Justine Henin-Hardenne's surprise unimpressive form at Roland Garros carried on against dangerous Swiss player Patty Schnyder with the Belgian's serve faltering at times after winning the first set 6-3. Schnyder led early in the second set 2-0 and carried her good form throughout the second to claim it 6-2. The dominance and composure from the fourth-seed was good enough in the final set which was lucky for her just to scrape through 6-2 in the third.

Amelie Mauresmo looks in top form ahead of her quarter-final clash of Serena Williams with an impressive and very easy win over in-form clay player Magui Serna 6-1, 6-2. The last time Mauresmo and Serena met was at the Italian Open where the French woman rallied back from the brink of defeat for her first ever win over the world number one. All the quarter-finals will take place on Tuesday.

Meanwhile a very intresting match took place between 8th seed Chanda Rubin and Petra Mandula. Rubin is not playing at all near her potential and lost the first set 6-4 then won the second 6-2. The third set went all the way with Mandula looking as if she could squeeze through and cause a major surprise but sadly for her Rubin won it 7-5. She now meets Justine Henin-Hardenne.
