Jennifer Capriati advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nathalie Dechy of France in the $1.224 million clay-court German Open. The match looked to be a fascinating encounter early on with big groundstrokes and good rallies from both player with Dechy matching the game of her opponent. The French girl could have caused Capriati more problems than she did but became frustrated with her shots and line calls.

Kim Clijsters into quarter-finals after struggling early on against Fabiola Zuluaga by won through after a hard fought 7-5, 6-3 win to advance to the quarterfinals of the .

Clijsters needed four match points to beat the 52nd-ranked Zuluaga in the event. The Colombian was infront 5-2 in the first set and 15-40 on the Cijsters serve but couldn't take the set points. Kim then raised her game to reel off 5 games in a row to win the first set. Zuluaga was never really going to win the match but at times looked the better of the two.

Second seed and defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne defeated 15th-seeded Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-3 as the Swiss player had one of her off days. Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian had her chances to cause an upset over seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova but couldn't hold on and lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Warsaw champion Amelie Mauresmo won the last 3rd round match after she beat Anna Pistolesi in a different match to the one last week where they both battled in a 2 hour 30minute battle. Mauresmo took a different approach this match by playing quicker points with the odd long hard rally.
