The USA have taken a commanding 2-0 lead after the first day's play in the Collins Cup, Dublin. Anna Kournikova, Lindsay Davenport, Barbara Schett and Monica Seles were all in action. Lindsay Davenport gave the Americans a great start to the Collins Cup with a straight sets victory over Austria's Barbara Schett. Schett, representing Europe, fought galiantly, but was unable to stop the powerful Lindsay Davenport from taking the glory. Davenport took the tie 7-5 7-5, breaking Schett in the final game of the second set.

Crowd favourite Anna Kournikova was next up on court, and was faced with the responsibility of keeping Europe in touch with the star studded American team. Once again, the scoreline was tight, but Seles held her nerve to take a 7-6 first set win. Seles remained professional with her play, and despite some encouraging tennis from Kourikova, Seles took the second 6-4 to give the Americans a comfortable 2-0 victory.
