Wrexham's Racecourse will host UEFA Cup football next season with Bangor City using the Division 3 side facilities for the competition. It's almost that time of the year, when European football returns to the Racecourse and this season will be no different as Bangor City will be using our facilities to host their UEFA Cup matches.

TNS are also in the UEFA Cup after finishing second in the league, but they appear to have opted to use Newtown instead of returning to Wrexham as they have in previous years.

This will please groundsman Johnny Edwards as Bangor are not due to begin their campaign until mid August, whereas TNS start in the round earlier.

City's Commercial Manager Hayley Meek was at the Racecourse on Wednesday to discuss details and have a look at the facilities available for any corporate sponsors that might be interested in supporting City on their European adventure.

This is how the Bangor website - Citizens Choice - reported the news:

City boss Peter Davenport has confirmed that the home leg of the UEFA Cup tie will be staged at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Fresh from a Soccer Sevens Tournament in Hong Kong Davenport has been quick to speak out on the vexed issue of the home leg fixture.

"We have agreed to play at Wrexham and our lads are looking forward to playing on what is an excellent playing surface."

There has been some discussion amongst City supporters regarding playing the match at Farrar Road but - unsurprisingly - that is not possible. Nor is Rhyl a serious option after the Welsh Cup semi-final fiasco when supporters had to walk along the pitch to change ends because of the lack of space in the new stand.

The Bangor boss concluded: "The ideal scenario would be to play that match in Bangor, but we will have to wait until the new ground is ready before that is possible."

It certainly sharpens the mind to the importance of speeding up the new development, which seems to be on perpetual hold.
