It is with regret that my horn died on Saturday during the game v Moseley. The poor thing had sat in the car unloved for several months since it was last used.
Several attempts were made to resuscitate it during the match but to no avail. It later became apparent that the reed had been sitting in a pool of dried spit for months without me noticing.
The autopsy was carried out by me later in the evening, with 2 sets of pliers, a can of WD40 and a ball of wire wool. (For those of you unfamiliar with the signal horn the reed is a metal) After 20 minutes on the operating table it became clear that it would never work again. With tears in my eyes I took it to the bins outside said a quick prayer and threw it in. 2 minutes later I went to the bins because I realised I had thrown it in the ordinary bin and not the recycle bin. After all some other horn in heaven may be able to use some of the parts, rather like an organ/ horn donation.
Now it begs the question, should I try to find Mrs Drifters horn, or has that had the same terminal fate? Well if I could find it I would be able to give it a try. Of course it could be hiding somewhere. Where has she put it? Bet its where all of my spare socks are! Until I come out of several weeks mourning the other hornblowers will have to continue without us. I say us because I felt a close bond that has now ended.
I have again been to the bins, got me horn out, given it a good wash, dried it off and am going to place it on the mantle so I can give it a try out every now and again. Can Horns be reincarnated?
Commiserations on your sad loss. Let us not mourn it, but rather rejoice in the pleasure it gave to others. Instead of having a solemn funeral why not celebrate its life, say in the Coliseum or bar of your choice at the next home match. I'm sure it's what the horn would have wanted.
Years ago a French side came to play in Glasgow and a couple of their supporters had a big drum. Certainly added to the atmosphere.
The horn is our drum and helps the tuneless to be sort of in tune...please a replacement.
Would even make a small donation...and for a Scotsman that is saying something
AH HA ! I have found mrs drifters horn, am in the process of some major surgery. I have made her sign a disclosure as with all operations I cannot be 100% sure it will work. If it does I will let you know. But the next home hame I can attend will be the next home league match as my son is making his Pro debut in mixed martial arts (Cage fighting on the B&I cup game date.) don,t want to argue with him really!!
