The Indian Selectors announced a well-balanced side for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.  Interestingly this is a Test Match ONLY tour.  This rarely happens in this day and age, but maybe it is a remnant from a previous tour where India played only limited overs cricket. 

In any case, with the weather likely to be patchy, with high possibility of rain-outs or rain delays, a result may not be easy to achieve.   But with a varied bowling attack and quality spinners and pacers alike if a result does occur India may just come out on top.  Afterall Pakistan with a similar bowling attack and a much less vaunted batting line-up got the better of Sri Lanka recently.

Also Kumar Sangakkara who announced in advance his intent to retire after the 2nd Test of this series, may have something to say about that.  His teammates would also be interested in helping him retire on a high.  So will be interesting to see how Virat Kohli's first full series as Test captain goes.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee met earlier today, to pick the Indian team for the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

The team is as follows:

Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Varun Aaron.

Read that Kohli asked to play in the India A match against Australia A...to warm-up in the longer format... that is a good move by the Indian Captain...

No left arm bowler for India... that is a trick missed...

They should have picked at least one, either a spinner or seamer...

I don't know how long they can persist with Saha... against Bangla his batting was shambolic....keeping was ok.. but these days keeper has to be a nearly full batsman...

If they can go back to Bhajji and Mishra with the ball...why not Parthiv Patel behind the stumps?

Naman Ohja was a flop against Aussie A... Maybe Rayudu can play as keeper batsman?

Rayudu cannot play as keeper in 5 day games. Doubt he can do one day either, maybe T20. The next keeper in line could be Ankush Baines the 19 year old who will play against SA A team in 4 day games.

Samson dropped two catches and was not tidy against Australia A game. He was not keeping for Kerala and it is showing. If he cannot perform better, he will lose his pecking order status as next in line.

Parthiv always bats well and he is a left hander which we do not have too many. But his keeping was not up to par before, maybe he is better now but not sure he is the best. Is Ankush Bains next in the order? What about CM Gautham?

Superb bowling by Ashwin, congrats to him. Also excellent close catching by India, except for a couple of misses. Kohli's aggressive field placings were great to watch. Though I fail to understand what he continues to see in Varun Aaron. He just bowls straight up and down and is also not accurate. Umesh Yadav at least moves the ball sideways a bit.

Solid batting by Dhawan and Kohli for the most part. But they must not give it away. It won't be easy for a new batsman on this pitch.

Excellent comeback by Kohli and Co. after the heart-breaking loss in Galle... India should have won 3-0...but will take 2-1 as sign of fight and maturity by this young side.
