Tendulkar out of sorts

By ICF Staff
February 20 2012

Sachin Tendulkar's poor run of form in the away series in Australia has resulted in him being placed in the same category as Dravid and Laxman. Is this fair?

India's high point in their tour of Australia occured at the very beginning.

The first two days of the first Test in Melbourne saw India at the top with ball as well as bat.

India's experienced and new pacemen shot out Australia cheaply after Clarke won the toss and batted, as Zaheer Khan bowled with control and guile, and Umesh Yadav with speed and hostility.

Then the Indian top order batted splendidly on the second day, leading most people to believe that India would dominate Australia on this tour. Sachin Tendulkar batted magnificently for his 70, and was out against the run of play. Even Sehwag sparkled with the bat.

For a team that usually starts poorly, this was taken as an indication that India was only going to get better, and spank Australia in their own backyard. This was certainly the time to do it, after Australia coming off losses against weak teams including New Zealand.

That did not materialize, and India's collapse after those first two days has been nothing short of remarkable for one of the best teams in the world - number 1 in Tests only a few months back, and top dogs in ODIs as current World Cup champions from a win in the biggest tournament in the game a few months earlier.

There has been much speculation about Tendulkar's 100th international hundred taking a toll on his batting, although that appears to be a lot more on the minds of media and fans than his own.

There is also talk about the 38-year old perhaps becoming part of the "senior" set, along wth Dravid and Laxman, with his best days behind him.

To rub insult into injury, he has been rotated in and out of the team in the one-day series, and advserse remarks have been made publicly by the captain about the quality of his fielding.

Can the greatest player in the game have deteriorated as suddenly as circumstances make him seem?

It is more likely that short-term memory makes it look that way.

Even in this tour, Tendulkar has been one of the better batsmen. While he has undeniably been far below his best, he has usually been better than the others. A break from the game should see him back to his best. His love for the game and his prodigious talent will not allow him to leave the team yet.

The team has performed poorly as a unit, starting with the captain, and although there are several home games on the horizon for the Indian team, it is necessary to clear out those obviously past their best, such as Dravid and Laxman, and bring in new players that can be groomed to replace these greats. Sachin will be needed to help this process.

What hogwash. Why was there no such thought in England, when Dravid was the only one scoring any runs and when Tendulkar couldn't buy a run there? Why was no such thought about keeping Dravid and "clearing out those obviously past their best, such as Tendulkar and Laxman"? If the WC was just "a few months ago", the England tour was even fewer.

One tour and Dravid has suddenly turned "obviously" past his best? Why was that not the case with Tendulkar after the England tour?

Why do they need Tendulkar for that "process"? There are already several senior people in the side to take care of the process - Dhoni, Raina, Zaheer, Sehwag, Gambhir are all senior enough. Tendulkar gotta go.

Even in England, Tendulkar was decent. He scored the second best number of runs for India. He was run out at the non-strkers' end in one inning when on 40. He had a scratchy 90 in one inning and he had several starts where he looked pretty good and got out. By the same token, VVS was very bad and all youngsters too. So what are we saying. Sachin still has the technique and appetite to score runs and he is still good enough.

I think Sachin should continue till end of 2012 in ODI and maybe end of 2013 in tests.

To me, Sachin should have retired from ODI at the end of WC 2011..nothing else left to achieve, he was already the best ever ODI player, and signing off after WC win is a great high...

He shud continue playing the tests for 2 more years, unless this 100th 100 consumes him...

Tendulkar's phenomenal hand-eye coordination, even at age 38, combined with his flawless technique, means he continues objectively to be among the best of our batsmen. Look at the averages, instead of the missing landmark century.

He doesn't get bowled most of the time, the mark of a batsman who is aging. (Think Dravid, Laxman, Ponting.)

Guy is nearly 40 and at that age, you need to perform consistently to justify a spot in the team. Otherwise Tendulkar is only blocking the position of promising youngsters like Rahane and M.Tiwary. He should retire from ODI's immediately. Indian cricket moved on after the retirement of legends like Kapil and Gavaskar...and it will after Tendulkar also.

Tendulkar's self-interest is unbelievable.....

If he thinks India is best served in him playing on anymore, he's either deluded or bent on getting that cooked up record...

I don't think he's crazy, so I'm pretty sure, he wants that thing over with...

24 needed with a bunny coming in at 11? No problem!

yeah, it some sort of personal fetish...not any sort of record..

I would think 50 Test hundreds is a much more impressive record....

And to think the likes of Gavaskar and Shastri and some other guys were calling for Sachin to be picked in every single match of the tournament. Whose best interests do these people speak for? I find it unbelievable that not one ex-India cricketer has called for Tendulkar to be dropped permanently. Except for Kapil Dev, who himself stayed on for too long in pursuit of a record. Hey, at least his was a legitimate record.

SRT is not in the same category as Dravid Utkala Bungle and VVS - he is still our #1 batsman (maybe after Kohli)

I assume you mean in Tests... as you mention Dravid and VVS....and you may be right...but it reflects poorly on India's young generation that is the case...

In ODIs... Gambhir, Kohli, and Dhoni all have been better than SRT...

If you ask the average Indian fan, they come to see Sachin play, not Dhoni or Virat. As of now that is. Yes they want India to win and they want a hundred from Sachin all the time.

I believe SRT should retire from ODI after this series or after the Asia cup coming up next month. He has been out of sorts and another good (great) start gone in the last game. Virat and Raina got about four lives and Sachin needs such a break.

He still fields very well inspite of Dhoni's slow comment.

sachin is better then rohit in the field and running between wickets.

sehwag took some blinders in this series.

if somehow sachin can get his 100th century then we will another 4-5 centuries in quick succession

I don't agree with this. Indian fans are quickly getting disillusioned with Indian team's poor performance. If the team was winning fine, but now that things are not good, people want new faces in the team.

Why does SRT not just make a cameo against BD an get his 100th ton ?

Also, BCCI can payoff the BD Board & they can ensure SRT gets it :-)

you are insulting a legend with 99 centuries. he doesnt need a cheapo like that. otherwise he would have gone to windies after the WC. he wanted to do it in LORDS.

anyway lets talk about aother 10 guys who are also not doing well

Round rock, I don't dispute that Sachin is still one of the best 11 players in India....

What I'm disappointed is that he's been pretty passive about this record...

The guy has plenty of meaningful 100s against international sides in FC games(for example his famous double century for Mumbai against the visiting Aussies) that set the tone for that series....

All this media hype is proving to be a distraction in an already disastrous tour....

All that Sachin had to do was to call a press conference and basically say: "look guys, I'm playing because I enjoy the game and not for this 100th century; I've other hundreds against international touring sides. if this thing happens, it happens, let's not discuss this in the media anymore, it's not even a real record, since it's combining numbers from 2 formats"....

By keeping mum, the guy appears to give the impression that this thing is weighing heavily in his mind and his performance has suffered....

Even in this tour, SRT early on in the tour was a much better player as the tour has gone on without him getting this "record"....

ananthd you are assuming Sachin really doesn't care about the "record"... but clearly he does...

So he won't say he doesn't... though maybe if he played like it didn't matter...he'd actually get it...

Birbal, it's obvious he cares very much about the record....

My wish was that he said in public "I don't care about the record, I just love playing, so I play, please don't mention this as a record", so that it shuts the media up at least...

Now, I feel since he didn't bell the cat early, it's tough to catch it now, it's gone too far...

Tendulkar is better than Raina and Jadeja STILL...and hence can hold a place on merit.

if you make tendulkar bat at No. 5 to 7 and make him bowl 5 to 7 overs...he will pull his weight BETTER than specialist and young Jadeja and raina are doing.....and are deemed to have their positons cast in stone in the team.

It's like Kapil dev....when he retired they brought in likes Robin singh, ajay Jadeja, lakshmi ratan shukla, gyanendra Pandey, JPY, Bangar, Noel David at various stages to fill in the "allrounder" slot vacated by Kapil.

Even an old and declined kapil was bettter than every one of the above with both bat and ball.

the same applies to tendulkar......even in his old age he is better than every one of the proposed replacement that are being brouhgt in.....especially if he allowed to play in the middle order.

We must not confuse between Tendulkar 1-having declined from his peak.....and; 2- his ability to hold a place on merit still

1 and 2 are both correct.

there is a saying in one of our ancient scriptures....even a dead elephant is worth a Lakh.....and our elephant ain't even dead yeat

Agreed. He should have said this to the media - whether he cares about the record or not.

But if there's one weakness that Tendulkar has, it's communication skills.

Kapil Dev kept out guys like Srinath and later Prasad... the others you mention came later...

But the point is valid...

Look at Kapil's batting and bowling average in last dozen Tests...

Tendulkar these days is a shadow of the legendary batsman he was. Don't know about others, but I definitely feel sad to watch him get out to average bowlers and get outbatted by guys who are not anywhere near talented as him. Even Indian fans are quickly losing patience...I saw a poll in which nearly 60% people said Tendulkar needs to be dropped from ODI team. That number will only go up with time.

Congrats to Indian team and all Indian fans!
