Ireland want more chances for minnows

Ireland has demanded that associate teams get a fairer chance to compete in the World Cup.

Kevin O'Brien hit the fastest century in a World Cup, and Ireland mounted the biggest chase in the World Cup to win a game.

His team is unhappy that ICC has reduced the number of minnow teams in the World Cup, despite the uncompetitive nature of the first month.

Ireland has beaten England, Holland almost beat England, and Canada gave England a tough time. In addition, Pakistan has received a scare at the hands of Canada.

In the 2003 World Cup, Kenya progressed to the Super Six stage.

While upsets will happen, it remains to be seen if the associate nations can be consistent at the top level.

NO..

After more than half the 1st round matches involving minnow, we get 1 upset..not worth it..

meaningless world records, centuries, hat-tricks against these minnows, diluting the cup that counts..

STOP THAT!!

But on the other hand the associates should be given more chances to play regional ODI tourneys like Asia Cup, Africa Cup... etc...

Also since Zimbabwe have been dropped as a Test nation...maybe it is time to give Ireland a chance...

14 teams is right for the wc. but homegrown teams like afghanistan & nepal should be given the chances instead of immigrant based teams like canada & uae

if we had scotland & afghanistan instead of kenya & canada, then the wc would have been a bit better

^i hate england also. a max limit of 2 foreigners per team can be set. in that case only 2 of strauss, trott, pietersen, prior, morgan will be able to play & 3 of these will miss out

and it would also mean that the true associates like ireland & afghanistan come up. in the ire v eng match, ireland had only 2 foreigners(cusack & johnston) compared to englands 4(strauss, pietersen, trott, prior)

I hope you realise both Strauss and Prior moved to the UK when they were children! I am not sure if you can exactly ban immigration!

Tell me where Robin Singh is from?

Cricket is not the only sport where foreign-born players can play for a country - and the Cricket World Cup is not the only event. Can happen in the Football World Cup, the Olympics, Davis Cup - you name it . As long as you are qualified to play there should be nothing stopping you.

^robin singh is 1 of the rare foreigners to play for india. we havent played any foreigner after robin singh retired. england have 4 on an average everytime they play & thats twice more than even ireland who have only 2 foreigners

the icc should keep the foreigners limit to 2 players in an xi at the most. so england would have to choose who to play in their xi out of the 6-7 foreigners they have in their squad

amit you should make a distinction between immigrants who came as youngsters and basically adapted their new country as their home...compared to cricket mercenaries... who played FC cricket in other countries and then moved to others...

Even though even in that case, if they meet the standard for Citizenship...why the discrimination...?

In all their 3 matches so far, Ireland have hardly looked like a so called "minnow". They have played with the talent and maturity of an established team. The ICC should ensure that Ireland are encouraged by arranging them frequent matches against the top teams every year.

yeah smaller team deserve the chance but too many smaller team is not good for WC touney. I would prefer 2 smaller team including Bangladesh.

Well then it will be only Bangla and Zimbok or maybe Ireland...

Looking at how Afghanistan has done in International Cup... FC tournament for non-Test teams... I think they would be more competitive than Bangladesh...except maybe in totally spin friendly conditions...

I think some kind of promotion-relegation system should be in place....

For example, Ireland on the basis of this performance could be promoted and teams like Kenya demoted...

ireland arent minnows at all. the thing which separates top teams like ireland & minnows like bangladesh is their attitude

this quote from kevin o brien says it all -

can u imagine any cricketer from a minnow team like bangladesh talking like that. only players from top teams like ireland say those things
