The IPL effect

India's poor showing in the last two T20 World Cups is directly linked to our players participating in the IPL. Both last year as well as this, the team had virtually no time to prepare for the WC, having been playing IPL up to a few days earlier.

It also didn't help that most of the Indian batsmen were out of form in the IPL, and heading into the WC. Success in the T20 format is more about preparation/planning and form/confidence. And due to IPL, India were down on both counts in the World Cup  

Then there is the question of fatigue. Unlike players from other countries, all our India players played in most of their IPL matches, so they must have been by far the most exhausted team in the tournament. This is not an excuse, but is sure to have made a difference.  

Another factor that needs to be considered is that the IPL has not benefited young Indian players much. Most of the top batting or bowling roles are taken by either overseas players or already established Indian guys. The youngsters are mostly pushed to the sidelines and they may actually lose confidence. So perhaps it may even be worthwhile to ban foreigners and have only Indian players in the tournament. 

Either way, it is vital that the BCCI looks into the IPL Effect as soon as possible, and  take steps to resolve the problems it has created.

Good points. But what do you think the players would prefer though? The IPL must be a nice earner for all involved.

Must admit, from the IPL I saw, it was entertaining watching Hayden and his mongoose, but I enjoyed watching the younger Indian players get suceess more.

Maybe you have to give it more time, I'm sure the benefits will ripple down to the grass roots.

That's quite possible. But even if the young Indian players do improve because of IPL...their skills will only get better in the T20 format. The skills required for ODI or Tests are vastly different, and it will not be affected. If anything, the "Easy" money offered by IPL, can distract these younger players and make them lose motivation to play Tests. I think it has already started happening with the current generation. Only way out as I see it, is to downsize the IPL. If it actually grows bigger as is expected next year, then God save Indian cricket.

The funny thing is the BIGGEST names in T20 all got their BIG names by playing Test cricket...

The exceptions are the Windies bloke Pollard and a couple of Aussies...
