Six of the best

By Ivybridge Wolf
April 26 2025

A quick quiz. What do Manchester City October 1970 and Leicester City April 2025 have in common? Answer – both of their next games were against Wolves who were on a five top flight match winning streak. On October 24th 1970, a Gould brace and another from McCalliog gave Wolves a 3-0 home win to make it six in front of 32,654. What will happen today versus already relegated Leicester City? Let’s hope the Old Gold show the kind of form and resilience we’ve enjoyed so much to get the right result today in front of the Molineux crowd. As a great sage once said, “First the points, then the pints”, he’ll keep the team grounded and focused, though it’s certainly been fun of late! For those who can remember or those who can’t, our squad of 1970-71 is honoured in the photograph today, some terrific players there!

Concerning team selected, after a very good performance from Dan Bentley at Old Trafford last Sunday, Jose Sa is fit again and set to make his return. Additionally, both Bellegarde and Hwang are fit and could well be involved. The first eleven have been reasonably settled, the principle changes last week due to injury, so what will Vitor do today? Will Bellegarde get back in automatically (is he fit enough for a start?)? Will Sarabia get the nod from a boss who clearly rates him and is currently the man of the moment after his screamer of a free kick? Finally has Cunha done enough to keep his place? I’m going for the latter, Cunha just three goals behind Jimenez’s 17 five years ago! The final change last weekend was with Santi Bueno will he keep his place or will it go back to The Doc? They’ve all been paying well.

There have been some cracking matches versus Leicester and I’ve had the good fortune to be at both of the 4-3 Wolves’ wins, however this seasons 3-0 win at their place pre-Christmas was as vital as any more recently, being five points behind the East Midlanders. Since then, the difference in fortunes is stark, Wolves getting 29 points and Leicester just four. Surprisingly, to me at least, Wolves haven’t done the double over The Foxes since ’58-59, though their challenge today is, on paper, pretty stiff having won only three of their last 19 away matches, they’ve lost 16 out of the last 18 and bar a good performance versus Brighton, have not scored in nine of the last ten. Finally they have only kept one clean sheet in a win versus Bournemouth last October.

Can the stats play our on the Molineux pitch this afternoon. Every point has to be earnt.

I was due to go today but events have conspired, so will be hoping to follow the match and maybe a bit of racing from Sandown, and hope to update the thread as things develop on the pitch, please feel free to add your comments and thoughts on the match from your own perspective.

All the best, good luck to Vitor and the lads to keep this run going, then we are all allowed to have a drink!

This was going to be a “big” six-pointer, and now it has that kind of end-of-season blah about it. But you can bet Sarabia, Bellegarde and Doc will want to play. As, maybe, Cuhna might. Hope he signs for ManU in his quest for “bigger things” and then has to sit watching Spurs grab that final Champions League spot, while Shi is counting his cash and wondering how little of it he can get away without spending.

Meantime it should be fun watching a match where we’re not desperate for points

Cunha starts and Doc gets the nod today, pleased to see him back, he’s had an excellent run of form under Pereira.

First shot of the match from Cuhna, well well wide!

Plenty of early Wolves possession

Leicester keeper with a stray pass to Andre who is wide attempting to lob the keeper from 40 plus yards

Toti shoulder barges after his poor error, gives away a free kick and gets a yellow card.
Incredibly harsh yellow

From that and then a long throw, first corner to Leicester,
Decent header from Coady but the save was comfortable.
That throw in was a foul throw

Keeper smashes his clearance against Larsen and unfortunately there wasn’t the pace on that rebound to get into the goal.

27 gone and the first shot on target from Cunha who was unbalanced as the ball came to him following a nice Wolves move.

Plenty of nice passing and approach play from Wolves but the only player to trouble their keeper so far is ….. their keeper

And with that a RAN effort blocked maybe on the line by Paes.

Plenty of Wolves pressure in the last 2 minutes. Knocking on the door?

Needs the killer touch

1-0
Cunha!!

Fabulous interplay from Cunha and RAN, but ends up with a lovely cross on the deck to Cunha who guides it in!!!

Deserved on balance, it had been building to it to be entirely honest

Good run from Toti to RAN who is fouled in Sarabia territory! Cunha smashes it into the wall.

HT 1-0 versus a poor Leicester side. But it’s only 1-0!

Half way there to the home side who deserve to be in the lead

You win some and lose some in life. I missed the Strand Larsen goal, 2-0 comfortable but I got the first and third in the big race at Sandown.

Never thought I could feel sorry for Vardy but when he missed the pen …..
Had to laugh though. Great result.
No Doyle even amongst the subs; looks like a goner. Baggies?

I don't feel sorry for Vardy. The cheating git made contact with Sa, not the other way round. Thankfully justice was done, great save. We were a bit sluggish at times in the first half but a good goal scored. I know I'm on my own with this, but we are going to miss Cunha when he's gone. We managed well without him for four matches but what does that tell us, it was FOUR matches. I'm glad we weren't without him for the whole season. A goal and two assists from him today, not that I rate the assists statistic that highly. As for never changing a winning team b0ll0cks, Vitor changed it twice in the last two matches and we still won.
