A Tale of Two Strikers

After the humiliation of our team suffered at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, Wolves must now try and continue their run of unbeaten home games tomorrow against high flying Aston Villa.  

Wolves cannot possibly believe they are beyond the risk of relegation from the Premier League being only seven points ahead with four games to play, so it is imperative that last week's performance and result are put behind them, and they return to a confident, skilful team effort in front of their own fans, in order to aim for the magical forty point total. The game at Villa Park soon after Unai Emery arrived was a close affair, with Daniel Podence's classy goal looking like it might be enough to win all three points for much of the game until - almost inevitably - Danny Ings equalised soon after joining the game. However since then Villa have gone on to have an excellent season, establishing themselves in the top half of the table with Emery making it quite clear that he is seeking European football for his team. Yet, in the last six games they have only won one more game than Wolves.

For their part Wolves have done very well to win their last three games at Molineux against Chelsea, Brentford and Crystal Palace without conceding, so the objective will clearly be to continue that progress, although we can probably expect a much tougher game than the last three. To achieve this we will need players to step up to the mark, and Julen Lopetegui to field an attacking team rather than the defensive line-up he fielded last week. There have been calls for Dan Bentley to be given a chance to prove himself in goal after Jose Sa once again gave a goal away by passing sloppily out to a marked defender, which must be the third such offence this season from him. Matheus Nunes had a dreadful game in which just about everything which could go wrong for him did.  In fact the only player in the team who deserved any credit was Pedro Neto who valiantly tried to launch numerous attacks with little support. Nelson Semedo left the pitch with a knee injury and is a concern for tomorrow's game.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 3pm and will not be televised. Our referee will be Stuart Atwell with Tony Harrington on VAR Duties.

For our part Ivybridge Wolf and I will not be able to offer regular updates on the board as we will be seated together high up in the North Bank. If a signal allows we will try to offer an opinion at half time. Board members and visitors are however encouraged to post their own observations and opinions before and during the match, particularly for those unable to watch it or follow it otherwise.

Sandwiches and bag packed, ready for the journey.

I am genuinely expecting a vast improvement of that insipid pile of sh!te I saw last weekend, it could not possibly be any worse! Brighton were excellent but there were so many 2 to 4 out of tens it was untrue.

At any rate, it’s the Villa tomorrow and a bit of midland pride should be incentive enough for us to stop them in their tracks up the table. Personally I am in the camp of giving Sa a rest after his South coast nightmare, though I’m really unsure what side Lopetegui will select.

Great 3 points. Any win against villa is a good one.
Maybe sat back a little to much but we defended really well.
Thought Dawson was outstanding again.
Salty villa fans think they should be beating us all the while.
Get over it you deluded vile fans you lost again!.
Well we are playing in the premier league again next season, well done on a great win today wolves!

3 points was fabulous, dogged and professional if not pretty. Not sure how Mings missed that chance, nor Watkins and on our side, Nunes should have done better with the Neto jink and cross.

Always great to see a win, even better that it was v Villa and seeing Chesh was the icing!!

On the downside, my car broke down in Wolverhampton after the match and 4 Ivybridge Wolves would have been stranded but for the RAC ordering a taxi for us for the 200 miles. Got home about 11.30pm. Could have been worse.

So a day to remember for the mainly right and some logistical wrong reasons.

A very enjoyable afternoon out with the Ivybridge Massive, topped off by a hard earned win. We always knew it would be a hard game bearing in mind Villa’s recent progress,but having scored with a great header, we defended exceptionally well, whilst making some forays forward, when we probably should have extrnded our lead. Wonderful atmosphere at the end of the game and great to see our players and management team celebrating reaching 40 points.

Looking forward now to a return visit to the Mol for the Everton game.

Otherwise I'm happy it was a grand day out for you and yours and your partner in crime...

Now that the pressure for points has eased, I hope we see some more quality and better performances in our remaining games.
